Box Score Shorewomen Improve to 10-1 for First Time Ever
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Freshman midfielder Michaela Conners (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored three goals in a three-minute and 17-second span in the second half as the Washington College field hockey team improved to 10-1 overall for the first time in team history with a 7-0 Centennial Conference win over host Swarthmore College this afternoon.
The Shorewomen, who also improved to 3-1 in conference play with the win, got on the board 7:36 into the game when senior attack Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) scored off an assist from sophomore attack Jennifer Tordella (New Castle, Del./William Penn). Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Davis (Earleville, Md./Bohemia Manor) then blasted in her 10th goal of the season from just inside the arc off a penalty corner insert from senior attack Grace Phillips (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) just 2:35 later. Davis scored again on a similar play, this one off an insert from sophomore defender Allison Remenapp (Woodbine, Md./Century) with 14:03 left in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Alli Dudley (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) tacked on Washington's fourth goal with an unassisted tally 10:21 before halftime.
The score remained 4-0 until Conners found the back of the cage with 16:08 left in the contest. Conners scored again, this time off an assist from freshman defender Katie Arnold (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Christian), just 2:08 later to push the lead to 6-0. She scored her third goal of the contest just 1:09 after her second goal, making the score 7-0.
Ainsley Parrish made 12 saves and allowed seven goals for Swarthmore (1-11, 0-5) before leaving the game late in the second half. Ellory Laning replaced Parrish and made one save. Junior goalkeeper Sadie Robertson (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) picked up the shutout for the Shorewomen without needing to make a save. The Shorewomen out-shot the Garnet, 33-3, and had a 15-6 advantage in penalty corners in the game.
Washington's seven goals were its most in a single game since the Shorewomen scored a school-record 15 in a 15-1 win at Bryn Mawr September 21, 2011. The scoring output was also the Shorewomen's largest ever in 29 all-time meetings with Swarthmore.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Muhlenberg.
