Kendall, Sugalski Power Shorewomen Past Bulldogs, 59-49, in Opener

Shorewomen Advance to Championship Game of Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament

MAHWAH, N.J. -- Junior forward Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and junior guard Kelly Sugalski (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) combined to score 14 of the Shorewomen's final 18 points as the Washington College women's basketball team defeated Brooklyn College, 59-49, in the first round of Ramapo College's Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament tonight in Mahwah, N.J. The game was the season opener for both teams.

The Shorewomen held a 30-19 lead at halftime and had a 36-27 edge with fewer than 13 minutes to play in the second half before a 15-3 run by the Bulldogs gave them a 42-39 lead on a Nicole Francomano lay-up with 7:31 on the clock. Brooklyn's lead grew to 47-41 on a jumper and free throw by Megan Campbell with 5:36 remaining. 

Washington battled back, trimming the lead to 47-46 on a three-pointer by Kendall with 4:10 on the clock. Kendall then assisted on a jumper by Sugalski with 3:06 left as the Shorewomen regained the lead, 48-47. A Kendall jumper with 2:21 left pushed the advantage to 50-47 and a Sugalski three-pointer with 1:37 to go finished off a 12-0 run for the Shorewomen, giving them a 53-47 lead. 

Campbell finally put the Bulldogs back on the board with a jumper with 1:30 left, but a jumper by Washington freshman forward Brynne Brouse (Slatington, Pa./Parkland) with 48 seconds to play extended the lead back to six points at 55-49. A Kendall jumper with 32 seconds remaining and a pair of free throws by senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) with 19 seconds to go provided the final margin.

Kendall's 13 points paced the Shorewomen, while Sugalski finished with a career-high 12 points and a career-best five rebounds. Hubley added 11 points and team-bests of 10 rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard Ali Grundy (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) contributed a career-high nine points for Washington.

Campbell and Vanessa D'Ambrosi each had a game-high 15 points in the loss for Brooklyn. Campbell added nine rebounds. Francomano had 10 points and game highs of five assists and three steals, while Asia Foster brought down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Washington shot 45% from the field in the game, while the Bulldogs shot 32%. Brooklyn held a 43-35 advantage in rebounds.

The Shorewomen will play host Ramapo in tomorrow's championship game of the Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament at 2:00 p.m. Brooklyn will play St. Joseph's of Long Island at 12:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
