Box Score Grundy, Kendall Score 12 Points Each in Loss for Shorewomen
MAHWAH, N.J. -- The host Ramapo College women's basketball team out-scored visiting Washington College by 12 points in the second half to earn a 62-53 win in the championship game of the Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon.
The Shorewomen (1-1) held a 28-25 halftime lead despite shooting just 2-for-21 on two-point field-goal attempts in the first half thanks to sinking six of their 10 three-point attempts in the period.
Ramapo (2-0) opened the second half with seven straight points, building a 32-28 lead on a Jackie Jerkovich lay-up with 18:16 on the clock. The Roadrunners held the lead until Washington freshman guard Drew Arnett (Washington, D.C./St. Vincent Pallotti) scored on a put-back with 12:39 left to even the score at 34-34. Kerrie Kosakowski made both ends of two trips to the foul line to give Ramapo a 38-34 lead with 11:05 left. Washington sophomore guard Ali Grundy (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) drained a three-pointer 10 seconds later to trim the margin to a single point. Grace Elliott and Grundy traded lay-ups to set the score at 40-39 in favor of Ramapo with 9:14 left.
Grundy put the Shorewomen back in front, 42-40, with a three-pointer with 8:22 to go. With 7:57 left, Elliott made one of two free throws to cut Washington's lead to a point and a Kellie Lane steal and lay-up put Ramapo ahead, 43-42, with 7:01 on the clock. Bintou Berete added a pair of free throws with 6:43 to go as the lead grew to 45-42.
Junior forward Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) made one of two free throws for the Shorewomen with 6:17 remaining, but two Elliott free throws 18 seconds later made and a one-for-two trip to the line by Elliott with 5:07 on the clock extended the lead to 48-43. Arnett canned a three-pointer for Washington on the next possession, trimming the margin to two points with 4:45 to go. Jina Crawford made the second of two free throws for Ramapo with 4:27 left and two Berete free throws with 3:53 left pushed the lead right back to five points at 51-46. The Roadrunners led by at least three points the rest of the way.
Elliott led all scorers with 16 points, while Jerkovich finished with 15 for the Roadrunners. Kosakowski added nine points and eight boards, while Lake had nine points of her own. Berete had a game-best 14 rebounds to go along with six points.
Grundy and Kendall scored 12 points each for the Shorewomen. Grundy's 12 points were a career high. She also had five rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) led the Shorewomen in rebounds with six and swiped a game-high three steals to go along with 10 points.
Ramapo shot 40% from the field in the game while holding the Shorewomen to 25% shooting from the field. Washington was just 8-for-41 from two-point range in the contest.
Kendall and Hubley represented the Shorewomen on the all-tournament team.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Stevenson.
