Yocum, Hochstein Win Two Individual Events Each
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Washington College men's swim team won nine of 11 events en route to a 136-67 non-conference win over host Salisbury University this evening. The Shoremen improved to 2-0 on the season and 23-2 all-time against their Eastern Shore rivals. The Sea Gulls fell to 0-4 with the loss.
Senior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and sophomore Brent Hochstein (Towsend, Del./Salesianum School) each won two individual events for the Shoremen. Yocum won the 200-meter freestyle in a pool-record 1:59.33 and the 100-meter freestyle in 54.45. Hochstein took the 200-meter individual medley in 2:20.13 and the 400-meter freestyle in 4:30.29.
Freshman Finny Dorsch (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield), sophomore Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), and freshman Kevin Mackenzie (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]) each won one individual and took second in another. Dorsch won the 800-meter freestyle in 9:21.12 and was second in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:31.23, Elliott won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:02.66 and was second in the 200-meter freestyle in 2:04.36, and Mackenzie won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:09.41 and was second in the 50-meter freestyle in 24.94.
The Shoremen won both relay events as Elliott, Mackenzie, senior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and freshman Cody Weiler (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) captured the 200-meter medley relay in 1:52.77 and Lee, junior Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), junior DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall), and Yocum won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:41.21.
Weiler was also second in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:27.93 and in the 100-meter freestyle in 55.70. Lee added a second-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly in 1:01.84, while Logan was second in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:03.12.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their home opener, a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet against Gettysburg. Washington will bring an 11-meet dual-meet win streak into that meet. The Shoremen's last dual-meet lose came at the hands of Gettysburg in last season's opener.
