Box Score Morgan Scores 21 Points To Match Career-High
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Washington College junior forward Pat Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) matched his career-high with 21 points to lead all scorers as host Washington downed visiting Haverford, 81-66, on Tuesday night at the Cain Athletic Center in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game. The Shoremen are now 1-4 on the year and 1-1 in the Centennial, while the Fords fall to 2-4 and 1-2 respectively.
With the scored tied at 10-10 with 12:10 left in the first half, the Shoremen took the lead for good on a Morgan three-pointer with 11:55 left in the first to take a 13-10 lead. The triple would ignite a 32-12 run for the hosts as Washington took its biggest lead of the half at 42-22 with 89 seconds left in the first half on a triple from sophomore guard James Drury (Jenkintown, Pa./Germantown Academy). During the run, Washington sank six three-pointers. The Shoremen took a 42-27 lead into halftime as Washington shot 54% from the floor (15-for-28) and 50% from beyond the arc (8-for-16).
The Shoremen opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 52-29 with 17:35 left in the game on a traditional three-point play by junior forward Dave Knox (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South). The Fords would not go away quietly however as the visitors were able to trim the Washington lead to just eight points at 71-63 with 2:12 remaining on a pair of free throws by Gibby Graves. However the Shoremen would make all six free throws the rest of the way along with a pair of layups to pull away for the 15-point win.
In addition to Morgan, the Shoremen had three other players tally double figures in points. Senior guard Sean Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) had 17 points, Knox added 13 points, while Drury netted 10 points. Morgan had seven rebounds to lead the Shoremen as the hosts held a 35-29 advantage on the glass. Brooks, Drury and senior forward Sean Flanigan (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) each handed out five assists to lead all players. For Drury and Flanigan, the five assists are career-bests. The Shoremen shot season bests of 49% from the floor (26-for-53), 44% from three-point range (11-for-25) and 90% from the foul line (18-for-20).
Graves scored 17 points to lead Haverford and was joined in double figures in scoring by Lucas Colombo (11 points) and Justin Winkler (10 points). Colombo had nine rebounds to lead all players and led the Fords in assists with four. Haverford shot 39% from the floor (20-for-51), 18% from behind the arc (2-for-11) and 75% from the free throw stripe (24-for-32).
Washington outscored Haverford in bench points by a 26-16 margin, while the Fords outscored the Shoremen in points off turnovers by an 18-14 count. Each team scored 24 points in the paint. Washington turned it over 16 times, while Haverford lost the ball 13 times.
The Shoremen conclude their two-game homestand on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game versus visiting Gettysburg at the Cain Athletic Center.
