Box Score

Drury Scores Sets Career-Best with Game-High 22 Points

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Haverford shot 63.3% from the floor and held off a late rally by host Washington College en route to an 86-80 win on Wednesday night in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game at the Cain Athletic Center.  The Fords improve to 8-13 overall and 4-11 in the conference, while the Shoremen drop to 5-17 and 4-11 respectively.

Haverford led 10-2 with 15:11 left in the first half on a Lucas Colombo fast-break layup before Washington went on 29-11 run to take its largest lead of the game at 31-21 with 5:35 left in the opening stanza on a transition lay-in by sophomore forward Dave Knox (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) after Knox started the fast-break chance by blocking a Haverford layup.  However, the Fords would respond with a half-closing 16-2 run to take a 37-33 lead into the break.  The Fords took the lead for the rest of the game with 1:21 remaining in the first on a Matt Sherman three-pointer and closed out the scoring in the half on a Brett Cohen bunny with 35 ticks left.

The Fords came out strong in the second half with a 9-3 run to take a 46-36 lead with 16:40 left in the game on a Sherman triple.  A Cohen layup gave Haverford a 53-43 lead with 12:35 to go when the Shoremen went on a 16-9 run to cut the Haverford lead to 62-59 with 6:56 remaining in the game on two free throws by junior guard John Weston (Tampa, Fla./Bolles School).  However, the guests responded with a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the night at 71-59 with 4:31 to go on a Cohen fast-break lay-in.  The Shoremen would get within three points of the Fords at 74-71 with 2:35 to go on a traditional three-point play by freshman guard James Drury (Jenkintown, Pa./Germantown Academy).  However, that is as close as the hosts would get as Haverford hit 8-of-10 free throws and a pair of layups in the final 2:06 to get the win.

Four Fords tallied double figures in the win with Cohen and Columbo scoring 19 points each with Columbo totaling a game-best three steals.  Louis Cipriano netted 16 points, while Sherman added 13 points.  Gibby Graves handed out eight assists to lead all players and tied Cohen for the team-high in rebounds with six.  Haverford made 31-of-49 from the field for its 63.3% shooting percentage.  The Fords were 9-for-16 from three-point range for a clip of 56.3%, but shot just 56% from the foul line, going 15-for-27, but hit 8-of-10 in the final 2:06.

Drury set a career-high with a game-best 22 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line.  He made two three-pointers in three tries and also pulled down seven rebounds and handed out three assists.  Sophomore forward Pat Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) scored 13 points and pulled down a career-high and contest-best 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.  Knox also scored 13 points, while junior guard Sean Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) chipped in with 11 points.  Freshman guard Bryan Shapiro (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) passed out a team-high and set his personal-high with seven assists.  Washington shot 43% from the floor (26-for-60), 38% from three-point land (11-for-29) and 94% from the charity stripe (17-for-18).  The Shoremen held a 33-25 edge on the boards in the game and outscored the Fords in second-chance points, 10-2.

Haverford outscored Washington in points in the paint (34-27), points off of turnovers (24-12) and fast-break points (19-9).  The Fords turned it over just 12 times, while the Shoremen lost it 17 times.  The hosts held a 35-14 advantage in bench points.

The Shoremen return to the court on Saturday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. game at Ursinus in Centennial play.
