Cywinski Clinches Victory With Win at #2 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College took all three points at doubles and four of six points at singles to down visiting Goucher, 7-2, at the Johnson Fitness Center in a non-conference men's tennis match on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for Washington. The Shoremen improve to 1-0, while the Gophers drop to 1-3.
The Shoremen swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead. At #2 doubles, junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and Corey Pippin (Aberdeen, Md./New Covenant Christian School) won 8-0 over John Bescoby and Midori Fujitani in the first match to finish. The team of senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton (Fla.) and junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) won 8-3 at #1 doubles over the Gophers' Seth Hoesman and David Spivey. The #3 doubles team of senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and senior Hunter Scott (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) won 8-1 over Pat Murnin and Chad Resnik.
In singles, the Shoremen clinched the match at #2 singles when Cywinski topped Spivey (6-1, 6-0) to give WC a 5-1 lead. At #4 singles, Joel Novick bested Resnik (6-0, 6-1) to give Washington a 4-1 lead and its first win in singles. Holtschneider won both sets against Fujitani at #3 singles (6-2, 6-2) to make it 6-1 and at #5 singles Pippin downed Murnin (6-2, 6-0). Goucher won at #1 singles when Hoesman took both sets from Rajes (6-0, 6-4) and at #6 singles, Bescoby nipped freshman Emanuel Keiler (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt) (0-6, 7-6, 1-0). Bescoby won the super-breaker over Keiler 11-9.
The Shoremen return to the court tomorrow afternoon at The College of New Jersey with first serve at noon.
