VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Host Virginia Wesleyan College scored a narrow 5-4 win over visiting Washington College in a non-conference men's tennis match this afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.
The Marlins (4-1) staked out a 2-1 lead after doubles as Graham Wilson and Kenneth Downing topped junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]), 8-4, at No. 1 and Spenser Bullock and Tyler Chang defeated junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township), 9-7, at No. 2. Senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) notched an 8-5 win over Drew Tomajczyk and Griffin Graves for the Shoremen (2-2) at No. 3.
The two teams split singles play with the Marlins winning at the odd-numbered spots and the Shoremen winning at the even-numbered spots. Wilson beat Rajes, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1, Cywinski outlasted Downing, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 2, and Tomajczyk bested Holtschneider, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3. Joel Novick downed Bullock, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 4, Change beat Jeremy Novick, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 5, and Zachary Novick handled Brendan Kelleher, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action Thursday with an 11:00 a.m. match at Christopher Newport.
