Holtschneider & Jeremy Novick Win in Doubles for Shoremen
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Host Christopher Newport University defeated visiting Washington College, 5-1, in a non-conference men's tennis match today at Centre Court Racquet Club. The match was played to decision due to court time restraints. The Captains, currently ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, improved to 6-3 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Christopher Newport won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Steven Boslet and Sam Thomson were 8-5 winners over junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]) at No. 1, while Arttu Fiva and Michael Dodd defeated senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) by the same score at No. 3. The Shoremen picked up a point at No. 2 as junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) bested Joona Rahko and Chiraag Shetty, 8-6.
The Captains won the first three singles matches to finish, all in straight sets, to complete the victory. Thomson downed Rajes, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, Boslet beat Cywinski, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2, and Shetty topped Holtschneider, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3.
The Shoremen return to action March 22nd with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. match at McDaniel.
