CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Dickinson College won two of the three doubles matches and five of six singles matches en route to a 7-2 win over host Washington College in the Centennial Conference women's tennis opener for both schools today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Red Devils improved to 2-4 overall with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 2-2 with the loss.
Dickinson was strong in the lower part of the line-up throughout the match and third doubles was no exception as Madison Parks and Sarah Cantor got the Red Devils on the board with an 8-0 win over freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) and sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley). The Shorewomen evened things up with an 8-3 victory by sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) against Madeline Altholtz and Shannon Lavery at No. 1, but Dickinson took the lead for good with a 9-7 win by Sydney Diamond and Claire Stoner over sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) at No. 2.
Dickinson quickly ran its lead to 4-1 with 6-0, 6-0, singles wins by Joana Nunes over Valerio and Stoner over Benitez at No. 6, respectively. A 6-0, 6-1, win by Parks against Evans at No. 4 clinched the win for Dickinson before Kang finished a 6-2, 6-3, win against Altholtz for the Shorewomen's second and final point of the match. Lavery beat Weaver, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9, at No. 1 and Diamond bested McIntyre, 4-6, 7-5, 10-3, to complete the match.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. non-conference home match against York.
