Weaver Wins in Singles, Doubles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Franklin & Marshall, the eighth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, topped host Washington College, 7-2, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match today inside the Johnson Fitness Center. The Diplomats improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-4 and 0-3 with the loss.
Sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) were 8-3 winners for Washington at No. 1, defeating Caitlin Rummelsburg and Anya Sahaydachny. F&M won at the other two doubles spots as Megan FitzMaurice and Dana Sleeper defeated sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), 8-2, at No. 2 and Emily Gruenberg and Rachel Weinstein topped senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South), 8-4, at No. 3.
In singles, Weaver, the region's 17th-ranked singles player, picked up the Shorewomen's lone win, 7-5, 6-2, over Rummelsburg at No. 1. Sahaydachny beat McIntyre, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6, at No. 2, Russo downed Kang, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3, FiztMaurice bested Evans, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, and Gruenberg topped Stevens, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. At No. 6, Bunchey got the better of sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley), 6-1, 6-0.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Swarthmore.
