Shoremen Sweep Doubles Play in Victory
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Washington College men's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 7-2 non-conference victory over host St. Mary's College of Maryland this afternoon. The Seahawks fell to 0-2 with the loss.
The Shoremen swept doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the match. Junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]) posted an 8-2 victory at No. 1 against Andrew Gear and Mark Hardesty. At No. 2, junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) defeated John Feighner and J. Guzzone, 8-5, while senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) topped Robert Bishop and Wyatt Paulishak, 8-1, at No. 3.
The Seahawks (0-2) won at two of the top three singles spots as Gear beat Rajes, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, at No.1 and Feighner topped Holtschneider, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3. Cywinski picked up a win at No. 2 where he downed Hardesty, 6-4, 6-1. Washington won at all three spots in the bottom half of the singles ladder. Joel Novick beat Guzzone, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4, freshman Corey Pippin (Aberdeen, Md./New Covenant Christian School) defeated Bishop, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5, and senior Hunter Scott (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) topped Paulishak, 7-6(5), 6-2, at No. 6. Scott's victory was the first singles win of his collegiate career.
The Shoremen return to action Monday with a 2:00 p.m. match at Virginia Wesleyan.
