Box Score 2 #T23 Shorewomen Hold Bears To One Hit In Each Game of the Twinbill
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior first baseman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) notched three hits in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Ursinus to tie the conference's all-time hit record at 191 in a pair of #T23 Washington College 8-0 victories on Tuesday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen won both games due to the eight-run rule, five innings in the first game and six innings in the second game, and are 14-4 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial. The Bears fall to 5-11 and 1-5 respectively.
Dockrill tied the record with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning in game two when she singled down the left field line. She is now tied with Ursinus' Sue Sobolewski (1999-2002) for the conference's all-time leader in base hits. Dockrill would score the walk-off run in the second contest two batters later when sophomore Trish Langley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) singled down the right field line with the ball landing just fair in shallow right to plate freshman Kerri Estep (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) from third and Dockrill from second to end the contest and the doubleheader. She had two hits in the second contest, her other being a single through the left side with two outs in the bottom of the second.
In the second game, Washington scored four unearned runs with two outs to take a quick 4-0 in the last of the first. Junior shortstop Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) singled to shallow left on a flare just over the head of Ursinus shortstop Danielle Beal to drive in both freshman third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and senior catcher Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) to get WC on the scoreboard at 2-0. The next batter, junior pitcher/designated player Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) doubled to deep right to chase in Patinella to make it 3-0. The run scoring was capped in the frame when Cooper scored on a seeing-eye single through the right side off the bat of junior pitcher/designated player Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer).
The score would remain 4-0 until the last of the fourth when WC tacked on two more runs to grab a 6-0 lead. With one away, Dockrill drove in sophomore outfielder Paige Briganti (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) on an RBI groundout to second to make it 5-0 and with two outs, Nottingham scored on a single to right off the bat of Patinella to give the hosts a six-run cushion.
For Washington, who had 11 hits in the win, Cooper, Dockrill and Patinella each got two hits in the win with Patinella driving in a game-best three RBI. Langley had a pair of RBI and Nottingham scored twice. Briganti went 0-for-3 with a run scored and had her 20-game hitting streak, which dated back to the last three games of 2013, come to an end. She had 27 hits during her hit streak. In the circle, Anderson got the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. She went five innings, gave up just a leadoff single to the Bears Delia Mercurio as the only hit she surrendered, to improve to 4-0. She struck out one and retired 13 in a row after the leadoff single to Mercurio. She gave way to sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) who had a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth.
For Ursinus, Zoe Heinke took the loss and falls to 3-6 as she went the entire way for the Bears.
In the opener, Washington took control of the contest with a six-run bottom of the second inning. With one out, Cooper scored on a fielder's choice for the twinbill's first run. With two outs, Kirby singled to right to score sophomore outfielder Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) to make it 2-0. The next hitter Nottingham laced a three-run double to right-center to score Anderson, Briganti and Kirby to make it 5-0. Nottingham would score on a single through the right side by Dockrill to cap the scoring. On that hit, Dockrill tied Joy Hallfors (Gettysburg 2010-13) with 189 all-time hits for second on the conference's hit list and that would last until the second inning of game two when Dockrill passed Hallfors.
The Shorewomen scored twice in the last of the fifth to end the game due to the eight-run rule. With one out, Hofstedt singled to left-center to score Patinella to make it 7-0 and Briganti singled down the left field line to end the game as her hit scored senior second baseman Claire Mattox (Arlington, Va./Potomac School).
Nottingham had three RBI in the win and Hofstedt had a pair of hits as WC racked up eight hits in the win. In the circle, Cooper got the win to improve to 6-2 as she went the entire way allowing only one hit and struck out six. She recorded her 275th career strikeout in the top of the second when she fanned the frame's leadoff hitter Caitlin Whelan swinging. Cooper pitched to one batter over the minimum.
Heinke took the loss in the opener and dropped to 3-5. The Bears only hit came from Nikki Djambinov, who had a one-out infield single in the top of the second to shortstop deep in the hole.
Since 2012, Washington has won six of the seven meetings with Ursinus.
Washington is back on the diamond on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Haverford for a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference doubleheader.
