Shorewomen Reach 20 Wins For The Fourth Straight Season In DH Split Versus Profs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Schorr Strikes Out Eight In Game Two To Record Victory

GLASSBORO, N.J. – Visiting Washington College and host Rowan split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Rowan Softball Field.  The Shorewomen took game two by a 3-2 score, while the Profs took the opener 8-1.  The Shorewomen are now 20-8 overall, while the Profs are 19-8 on the year.

With the win in game two, the Shorewomen have now won 20 or more games for the fourth straight season after winning 20 games or more just once prior to this run, capturing 21 in 1997.  The win was also the team's first victory against Rowan in six tries.

In the second game, Washington got three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.  Senior catcher Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored on a fielding error by the Profs for the game's first run with one out.  The Shorewomen made it 2-0 when junior shortstop Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) singled down the left field line to drive in senior first baseman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and the run scoring was capped on a squeeze bunt by freshman third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) that plated junior designated player Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) to give the guests a three-run lead.

The Profs struck for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out two-bagger to centerfield off the bat of Shannon Costello that scored both Jennifer Arcella and Alysa Romero.  Costello represented the tying run with one out, but Washington sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) got a pop out to shortstop and a fly out to right field to keep Costello stranded and preserve the one-run lead.

In the seventh, the Shorewomen loaded the bases with nobody out, but failed to score in the top half of the inning.  In the bottom half, the Profs had runners on first and third with two out, but Schorr got
Ashley DeYoung to hit a liner back to her for the game's final out to allow WC to gain the split.

Schorr went the entire way for WC in the second game, striking out eight to improve to 6-4.  She gave up just four hits and two runs, while walking a pair.  At the plate, Dockrill went 3-for-4 and had four hits in the doubleheader.  Nottingham, Patinella and sophomore outfielder Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) all had two hits each as the team pounded out 12 hits.

For the Profs, Costello had two RBI and Shilah Snead had a pair of hits as the hosts had four hits in the nightcap.  In the circle, Beth Ann Hyland took the loss and falls to 8-5 as she went six-plus innings, giving up three runs, two earned and 10 hits.  She walked two and struck out four.

Rowan got onto the scoreboard with two outs in the bottom of the third inning when Romero launched a three-run home run to left field to also score Arcella and DeYoung as the rally for the Profs began after the first two hitters were retired.

The Shorewomen got one run back in the top of the fourth inning when Kirby worked out a two-out bases loaded walk to plate Nottingham to cut the lead to 3-1.  WC had loaded the bases with nobody out, but could only get one run.

The Profs blew the game open with a five-run last of the fifth with the big blow coming with nobody out on a two-run double to right-center off the bat of Costello to score Dana Cafone and Romero.

Romero led the way for the Profs in the opener as she went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored as the hosts had 11 hits in the victory.  Arcella went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Costello had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI, while Krysti Maronski helped her own cause by tallying two hits.  Maronski got the win in the circle to improve to 11-3 on the season.  She went the entire way, scattering three hits, one run, walking one and striking out 11.

For the Shorewomen, Cooper took the loss to drop to 9-3.  She went four-plus innings for Washington in the circle.  The offense was held to just three hits in the loss.

Washington is back in action on Saturday versus visiting Gettysburg in a Centennial Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
