Box Score 2 Patinella Homers Twice in Second-Game Win
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Host Washington College swept a pair of Centennial Conference softball games from visiting Gettysburg College this afternoon. The Shorewomen won the first game, 8-6, and blanked the Bullets in the second, 7-0.
In the opener, the Shorewomen plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning as senior catcher Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored on a bases-loaded walk by freshman third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and senior first baseman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) scored on a ground out by junior outfielder Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer). Dockrill's run scored was the 100th of her collegiate career, joining Nottingham as the only players in team history to reach that mark.
The Bullets evened the score in the top of the second as Meghan Hisgen led off the inning with an infield single and Emily Hall followed with a two-run home run to left field. Gettysburg took a 4-2 lead later in the inning on a two-out, two-run single by Jamie Abell. Washington tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the second as senior designated player Claire Mattox (Arlington, Va./Potomac School) scored when sophomore outfielder Paige Briganti (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) reached on a fielder's choice and Dockrill doubled in Briganti.
Washington regained the lead with back-to-back, two-out RBI doubles off the fence by Dockrill and junior shortstop Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep), driving in Nottingham and Dockrill to give the Shorewomen a 6-4 advantage. Gettysburg got a run back in the top of the sixth when Hisgen scored on a fielder's choice, but the Shorewomen answered in the bottom half of the inning as senior Hilary Rosenberg (Sweetwater, N.J./Oakcrest) scored on a wild pitch and Nottingham drove in junior second baseman Kelsey Graham (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) with a single to extend the lead to 8-5.
In the top of the sixth inning, Melissa Tighe tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jamie Abell to cut the lead to 8-6. Gettysburg got the first two runners aboard in the seventh, but the Shorewomen got out of the jam to hold on for the win.
Dockrill finished the opener 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI, while Anderson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Mattox was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) got the win for Washington, allowing six runs, five of them earned, on six walks and 10 hits while striking out six batters.
Hisgen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the loss for the Bullets, while Tighe went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Michelle Fox took the loss, allowing eight runs, six of them earned, on two walks and 11 hits in five innings.
Washington got off to another fast start in game two as a sacrifice fly by Patinella plated Nottingham, a single by Graham drove in Dockrill, and a bases loaded walk by Hofstedt scored Kirby all in the first inning to give the Shorewomen a 3-0 lead. Following a Dockrill walk, Patinella homered with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Briganti made it 6-0 when she drove in Mattox with a single in the bottom of the fifth. Patinella homered again in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-0.
Anderson pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout for the Shorewomen in the second game, walking just one batter while striking out six. Patinella, whose two home runs made her the only Shorewoman with multiple hits in the second game, drove in four runs in the win.
Abell went 2-for-3 in the second-game loss for Gettysburg. Lindsey Treanor gave up Washington's seven runs on seven hits and eight walks.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header at Swarthmore.
