Jeremy Novick Wins in Singles & Doubles for Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Salisbury University, the 19th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, topped host Washington College, the region's 20th-ranked team, 7-2, in a non-conference men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Sea Gulls improved to 11-4 with the victory, while the loss dropped the Shoremen to 7-6.

The Sea Gulls notched the first point of the match when Daniel Albers and Eric Spangler topped junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]), 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Washington evened the score with an 8-4 win by junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) at No. 2 over Shanon Gunter and Shane Gunther, but Salisbury took a 2-1 lead with an 8-4 win by Demetri Vranhos and Matthew McGaffney over senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Corey Pippin (Aberdeen, Md./New Covenant Christian School) at No. 3.

Salisbury increased its lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-0, win by Albers over Rajes at No. 1 singles and Spangler made it 4-1 with his 6-1, 6-0, triumph against Cywinski at No. 2. Vranhos clinched the victory for the Sea Gulls with his 6-0, 6-3, victory over Joel Novick at No. 3. Shane Gunther added a 0-6, 7-5, 10-6, win against Holtschneider at No. 4 before Jeremy Novick picked up Washington's second point with a 6-1, 7-5, win at No. 5. Shanon Hunter provided the final margin with his 6-1, 7-6(3), win over Pippin at No. 6. 

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Gettysburg.
