Box Score 2 Dockrill Sets CC Record For Most Career At-Bats; Dockrill and Nottingham Tie WC All-Time Games Played Mark
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Visiting Washington College and host Swarthmore split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Clothier Field. The Shorewomen took game one by a 6-1 score, but were unable to hold onto a 5-0 lead in game two and fell in eight innings by a 6-5 count. The Shorewomen are now 23-9 overall and 10-4 in the Centennial, while the Garnet are now 9-18 and 1-9 respectively.
In game one, Washington took a quick 1-0 lead when with one out in the top of the first, senior first baseman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) hit a one-out single through the left side to score senior catcher Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) for the game's first run. The Shorwomen struck for two runs in the top of the second on a two-out double to left off the bat of senior designated player Claire Mattox (Arlington, Va./Potomac School) to score both freshman Kerri Estep (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and sophomore outfielder Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) to give WC a 3-0 lead.
The Shorewomen made it 5-0 in the top of the third on a two-out, two-run, two-bagger off the bat of junior second baseman Kelsey Graham (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) to score both sophomore outfielder Paige Briganti (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Dockrill.
Swarthmore got on board in the bottom of the fourth when Jackie Pezzato with one out singled up the middle to score Chelsea Matzko to cut the lead to 5-1, but Graham's third RBI of the game and two double of the contest restored the five-run lead at 6-1 in the top half of the fifth when she drove home freshman third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) with two away to provide the final margin.
For Washington in game one, Graham went 2-for-3 with a career-high three RBI, while Kirby went 3-for-4 as WC had 12 hits. Briganti and Dockrill had two hits, while Mattox plated a pair. In the circle, junior pitcher Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) got the win to improve to 7-1. She scattered six hits, allowed one run, while striking out two in going the entire way.
Clara Obtsfeld had two hits for Swarthmore as the home team had six hits in game one. In the circle, Sarina Lowe took the loss to drop to 1-6 as she went three innings.
In game two, WC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Graham and Mattox scored on a throwing error by the Garnet. The Shorewomen scored three times in the top of the fifth with two outs to take a 5-0 lead. Dockrill roped a two-run double to left-center to score both Nottingham and Briganti and Dockrill would come home on a base hit up the middle by junior shortstop Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep). The Garnet got on the board in the last of the fifth when Obstfeld scored on an error with two away to trim the lead to 5-1.
Down to its last out in the last of the seventh, Swarthmore scored four times to tie the game. Emma Madarasz scored on an error to cut the lead to 5-2 and Rose Pitkin scored on a base hit up the middle off the bat of Anna Jensen to cut the lead to 5-3. Sara Planthaber scored on a bases loaded walk to Laurie Sellars to reduce the lead to 5-4 off of new pitcher Hofstedt and the hosts tied it when Nicole Aaron scored on a wild pitch. All four runs were unearned.
In the bottom of the eighth with two away, Pitkin doubled to center to score Matzko to complete the comeback.
Jensen and Pitkin had three hits each in game two for Swarthmore as the Garnet had 13 hits in the second game. Madarasz, Matzko and Pezzato had two hits each in the nightcap. In the circle, Melissa O'Connor got the win to go to 7-7 as she went the entire way. She gave up five runs, three earned on seven hits, walking two and fanning four.
Dockrill had two hits and two RBI, while Graham had two hits for WC which had seven hits. In the circle, Hofstedt took the loss in relief and falls to 0-1 as she came in with two outs in the last of the seventh. She relieved sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) as she went 6 2/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and five unearned runs. She walked two and struck out six. WC had four errors in game two, which led to five unearned runs for the Garnet.
Dockrill set another Centennial Conference record in the doubleheader, this time in at-bats as she now has 551 career at-bats, breaking the mark previously held by Janetta Trecroce of Ursinus (1994-97), who had 549 all-time at-bats. Dockrill and Nottingham also tied the program mark for games played with 161, tying the mark held by Lindsey Glascock (2010-13) and Shaelan Nottingham (2010-13).
The Shorewomen are off until next Wednesday when they travel to Stevenson for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
