Box Score 2 Nottingham Becomes First Shorewoman to Reach 100 Career RBI, Breaks School Record for Career Walks
HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Washington College senior first baseman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) broke the Centennial Conference record for career hits and senior catcher Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) became the first player in team history to reach 100 career RBI and broke the school record for career walks as the Shorewomen swept host Haverford College in a Centennial Conference double-header this afternoon. Washington, which won the first game, 8-4, and the second, 4-3, improved to 16-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the Fords fell to 12-6 and 1-3.
In game one, the Shorewomen plated two runs with two outs in the top of the first inning as junior pitcher Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) singled in Nottingham and Dockrill scored when junior shortstop Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) reached on an error. In the top of the second, Nottingham drove in senior designated player Claire Mattox (Arlington, Va./Potomac School) with a sacrifice fly before Dockrill singled in sophomore outfielder Paige Briganti (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) for her Centennial Conference record-breaking 192nd career hit, giving Washington a 4-0 lead.
The Shorewomen tacked on another run in the top of the third when Patinella scored on a two-out infield single by sophomore outfielder Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). Haverford got a run back in the bottom of the third as a two-out single by Julie Garlick drove in Jill Schnall, but an RBI single by Nottingham in the top of the fourth pushed the lead back to five runs. In the top of the fifth, back-to-back RBI singles by Nottingham and Dockrill played Mattox and freshman third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) to up the margin to 8-1. Nottingham's RBI single was her 100th career RBI.
Schnall hit a two-out home run down the left-field line in the bottom of the fifth for the Fords, while Jen DiCandilo drove in Garlick with a double in the bottom of the sixth. DiCandilo did more damage in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Elizabeth Newman with a two-out single, but the Fords could get no closer as Washington posted the 8-4 win.
Nottingham finished the first game 3-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases. Dockrill was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. Briganti went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Patinella was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Cooper got the win in the circle for the Shorewomen, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in six innings. Junior Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) pitched the seventh inning for Washington, allowing one unearned run on two hits.
Schnall went 2-for-3 with her home run and two total RBI in the opener for the Fords, while Garlick was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI and DiCandilo finished 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI.
In the second game, Washington took the lead in the top of the second inning as Patinella drove in Dockrill with a double. In the bottom of the second, the Fords evened the score when Newman drove in Lauren Touey with a single.
The score remained 1-1 until Cooper and Patinella hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth inning with one out. Cooper's was a two-run shot, driving in herself and Dockrill. Patinella's was the 100th hit of her collegiate career. Nottingham drew her school-record 52nd career walk earlier in the inning.
Haverford pulled to within a run in the bottom of the sixth as Schnall hit a two-run, two-out homer to cut the Shorewomen's lead to 4-3. Kristin Tatum hit a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh for the Fords, but Washington sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) got Kendall Chambers to strike out swinging to end the game and preserve the win.
Patinella was the only Shorewoman with multiple hits in the second game, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Schorr picked up the victory in the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out eight batters in seven innings of work. Tatum went 3-for-3 in the game two loss for Haverford.
Dockrill's combined four hits on the afternoon upped her career total to 195. The previous Centennial Conference record for career hits was 191, set by Sue Sobolewski of Ursinus from 1999 to 2002. The previous Washington College record for career walks was 51, set by Diane Green from 2003 to 2006 and matched by Lindsey Glascock from 2010-2013.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference double-header at Dickinson.
