Schorr Strikes Out Last Two Hitters of the First Game to Preserve Win

CARLISLE, Pa. – Visiting Washington College swept host Dickinson in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dickinson Park.  The Shorewomen won a pitchers' duel in the first game, 2-1, and the offense came alive for an 11-7 victory in the second contest.  The Shorewomen are now 18-4 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial, while the Red Devils drop to 6-16 and 2-6 respectively.

The Red Devils took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Stacie Maring hit a leadoff home run down the left field line.

In the top of the fifth inning, junior designated player/pitcher Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) singled to left field and sophomore outfielder Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tried to score from second base, but she was thrown out at the plate for the second out on a throw from Dickinson left fielder Nicole Piet.  The Shorewomen loaded the bases with two outs, but Red Devils' pitcher Chelsea Homa got out of it when she got freshman third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) to fly out to Maring in right-center.

The Shorewomen finally broke through in the top half of the sixth with a pair of runs.  With one out, senior catcher Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored on a ground ball off the bat of junior shortstop Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) to tie the game and on the play the throw to get Patinella at first base was errant and allowed junior pitcher Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) to score too to give WC a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Devils had Katie Swada on third with one out, but sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) struck out both Grace Edelson and Piet to end the game.  Schorr came back from 3-1 down on Piet to get Piet swinging for her third save of the year.

In the circle for the Shorewomen, Cooper got the win and improves to 8-2 on the season as she went six innings.  She went six innings and gave up just one run on five hits, walking three and striking out three before giving way to Schorr for the seventh inning.  Schorr walked one and gave up a hit, but struck out two.  WC was held to six hits in the opener at the plate.

Chelsea Homa was the hard luck loser for the Red Devils and drops to 5-7 as she went the entire way, giving up just five hits, two runs, neither of which were earned.  She walked four and fanned five for the hosts.  At the plate, Becca Garlinger was the only player to have two hits in game one as Dickinson had six hits.

In game two, Washington scored twice in the top of the first on a two-out single by Cooper that scored both Kirby and Nottingham to take a 2-0 lead.  It would be short lived however as Edelson launched a three-run homer to straightaway center in the bottom of the first to also score Swada and Casey Ditzler to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.

The Shorewomen got three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-3 lead.  Junior second baseman Kelsey Graham (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) tied the game with a single to score senior first baseman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and on the play a bad throw allowed Cooper to score to make it 4-3.  Graham would give the Shorewomen a two-run lead when she scored on a wild pitch as all three runs came with two outs.

Once again though, Dickinson answered with three runs to take a 6-5 lead after three.  Ditzler scored on an error to trim it 5-4 with one away and with two outs, Jay Abell scored two on a base hit to center to drive in both Edelson and Megan O'Neill to take a 6-5 lead.  O'Neill was able to score when Nottingham could not handle the throw at the plate from sophomore outfielder Paige Briganti (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park)

Washington regained the lead for the third time with a five-run top half of the fourth which was aided by two Dickinson errors.  Nottingham drove in two on a two-run bunt single that scored freshman Gina DeAngelis (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) and Briganti to put Washington ahead 7-6.  Nottingham made it 8-6 when she scored on an error at first base on a ground ball off the bat of Cooper.  Dockrill and Cooper scored on a two-base hit off the bat of Patinella to grab a 10-6 lead and Patinella scored on an error by the Red Devils for the fifth and final run of the frame.

The Red Devils got one run back in the last of the seventh when Maring scored on an Edelson single with one out, but that's all Dickinson could muster in the inning and WC got the four run win and twinbill sweep.

Dockrill sparked the offense in game two with a 3-for-4 with two runs scored performance as the guests had 13 hits.  Cooper had three RBI and two runs scored, while Nottingham had two runs scored and a pair of RBI.  Briganti had a pair of hits, while Patinella drove in two runs.  In the circle, Anderson got the win to improve to 5-0 on the season as she went the first six innings.  She struck out six in recording the victory.

Edelson went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored for Dickinson in the second game as the Red Devils had nine hits, while Abell went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  In the circle, Cassie Blyler took the loss and falls to 0-7.  She gave up 10 of the 11 runs, but just four were earned in 3 1/3 innings.

The Shorewomen have now swept the Red Devils in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in program history.  The other time was in 2005 and 2006.  Washington has also won five in a row over Dickinson, tying the mark for the most consecutive wins over Dickinson.  The team won five straight from 2004-06 over the Red Devils.  The Shorewomen have won seven of the last eight over the Red Devils in the series.

Washington is back in action tomorrow at Muhlenberg in another conference twinbill with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
