Anderson Becomes 18th Shorewoman Softball Player To Reach 100 Career Hits

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Host Muhlenberg swept visiting Washington College at Cedarcreek Field in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.  The Mules won the opener 4-1 and took game two, 8-0, in five innings due to the eight-run rule and got a no-hitter from pitcher Heather Porrini.  The Mules improve to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen fall to 18-6 and 7-3 respectively.

In game one, Muhlenberg wasted little time in game one getting on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Taylor Trifiolis doubled to right-center with one out to score both Erica Wenzel and Kelly Kline to make it 2-0 and Trifiolis came home on a wild pitch with two outs to cap the three-run inning.

Junior outfielder/pitcher Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) became the 18th Washington softball player to reach 100 career hits with a one-out single up the middle in the top half of the third, but WC could not turn that into a run.

In the last of the fourth, Alexis Giovinazzo scored on a line drive sacrifice fly to left by Alyssa Schell with one out to make it 4-0 Mules.

The Shorewomen, down to their last out, got onto the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning.  Junior shortstop Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep), who started the rally with a single up the middle, would score on an infield single to shortstop by sophomore outfielder Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) to trim the Mules' lead to 4-1 and sent the tying run up to the plate in Anderson, who was 2-for-2.  However, Muhlenberg pitcher Kelsey Jones got Anderson to strike out swinging to end the game.

Kline was 2-for-2 with a walk, while Trifiolis had a pair of RBI.  In the circle, Jones got the win to improve to 9-1 on the season.  She scattered seven hits, allowed one run, walked none and struck out four.

Anderson and Patinella each had two hits for Washington in the opener.  Pitching wise, sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) took the loss and drops to 5-3 on the season.  She went the entire way, giving up four runs on seven hits, walking five and fanning six.

In game two, the Mules got a one out single by Kline up the middle to score Schell for the game's first run in the last of the first.  Muhlenberg made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second when Nicole Donoghue scored on a double with one out by Nicole Iannarone.  Iannarone would score one a two-out fielding error by WC to give the Mules a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Muhlenberg made it 5-0 in the last of third with one out when Jaimie Klotz singled to center to drive in both Charli White and Colleen O'Donnell.  Klotz and Amie DeFeo scored on a two-run, two-bagger by Schell to make it 7-0 and the run scoring was capped Iannarone came home on an error to cap the five-run inning and gave the Mules an 8-0 lead.

Porrini walked just one batter and did not strike out a batter en route to her five inning no-hitter to improve to 6-3 on the year.  At the plate, Schell was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Klotz was 2-for-2 with two RBI and Iannarone was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.  Muhlenberg had 10 hits in the win.

Anderson took the loss and drops to 5-1 as she went just 2 1/3 innings.

The Shorewomen step out of conference on Wednesday afternoon when they host Catholic for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill.
