Shoremen Win Five of Six Singles Matches
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Visiting Washington College, ranked 20th in the Atlantic South region, rallied from a 2-1 deficit following doubles play to post a 6-3 Centennial Conference men's tennis victory over host Ursinus College this afternoon in Collegeville, Pa. The Shoremen improved to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play with the win, while the Bears slipped to 10-5 and 0-4 with the loss.
Evan Stutchin and Matt Hope recorded an 8-4 win over Washington junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]) at No. 1 doubles, while Tyler Arsenault and Henry Burke defeated senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township), 8-4, at No. 3. Washington's doubles win came at No. 2 as junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) topped Evan Lord and Logan Metcalf-Kelly, 8-5.
Two singles matches went three sets and the Shoremen won both of them. Joel Novick bested Arsenault, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 3, while Holtschneider rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, victory against Metcalf-Kelly at No. 4. Cywinski and the two younger Novicks all won in straight sets. Cywinski out-dueled Lord, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2, Jeremy Novick downed Dylan Marsh, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5, and Zachary Novick improved to 6-1 at No. 6 this spring with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Burke at No. 6. The Bears' lone singles point came at No. 1 where Stutchin led Rajes, 4-0, in the first set before Rajes retired.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Dickinson.
