Shorewomen and Cardinals Win One Game Each In Twinbill

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College and visiting Catholic split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.  The Shorewomen took game one by a 2-1 score, while the Cardinals returned the favor in game two by winning a 3-1 contest in eight innings.

In game one, with one out in the top of the fifth inning, Catholic (14-11) took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single to right-center off the bat of Kylie Finley to score Christy Sanchez for the game's opening run.  In the bottom half of the fifth, the Shorewomen tied it at 1-1 when with two outs, senior catcher Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) singled to left to plate senior Hilary Rosenberg (Sweetwater, N.J./Oakcrest) from second base.

In the bottom of the sixth, Washington (19-7) took the lead with nobody out when junior pitcher Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) hit a single off the glove of Catholic pitcher Victoria Capozucca and between the shortstop and third baseman into shallow left field to score senior first baseman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) for the winning run.  Dockrill started the inning with a double to left and that was her 200th career hit, the first ever Centennial Conference player to reach 200 all-time hits.  Cooper retired the Cardinals in order in the top half of the seventh to end the game.

Dockrill went 2-for-3 with a run scored and was the only player with two hits as the team had four.  In the circle, Cooper went the entire way, striking out five, scattering four hits, walking one and giving up one run for the Shorewomen.  She is now 9-2 on the year.

Capozucca was the hard luck loser for the Cardinals, giving up two runs on five hits, walking and striking out three to fall to 10-3.  Catholic had five hits in the game.

In game two, the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Erin Adams doubled down the left field line to chase home Amy Laughner with one away.

The Shorewomen tied it in the bottom half of the sixth when with one out, junior outfielder Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) drew a bases loaded walk to score freshman third baseman Caitlyn Kirby (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) to even the contest at 1-1.  Washington had the bases loaded with one out, but could not get the go ahead run.

Catholic in the top of the eighth got two runs to snap the 1-1 tie.  Laughner singled to center with one out to score Courtney Burke to make it 2-1 and Monica Peters scored on a throwing error to make it a 3-1 lead heading into the last of the eighth.  In the last of the eighth, Washington had the bases loaded with nobody out, but Capozucca in relief got three straight outs on a foul pop, infield fly and groundout to get out of the jam unscathed.

Capozucca got the win in relief as she went the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs.  She allowed one hit and walked three to get the win and is now 11-3.  She relieved Kimberly Giurlando who went the first 5 1/3 innings, giving up three hits, one run, walking four and fanning four.  Catholic had five hits in the win.

Sophomore pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) was the tough luck loser and drops to 5-4.  She went all eight innings, giving up five hits, three runs, one earned, walking a pair and striking out three.  The Shorewomen had only four hits in game two and left 15 runners on base.

WC is back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Rowan.
