ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Washington College sailing team finished 17th of 18 teams at the St. Mary's College Intersectional this weekend.
At the St. Mary's Intersectional, senior skipper Ryan Bailey (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and sophomore crew Karlyn Long (Louisville, Colo./Fairview) placed 17th in A Division. Washington was 18th in B Division. In B Division, sophomore Matt McDermaid (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) skippered with sophomore Mason Sheen (Mendeville, La./Christ Episcopal School) for the first six races, while Sophomore Alex Smith (Wantagh, N.Y./General Douglas MacArthur) served as skipper with McDermaid as crew in the final six races.
15th-ranked MIT won the St. Mary's Intersectional, followed by 12th-ranked St. Mary's in second and 13th-ranked Stanford in third. Ten of the current Sailing World Co-Ed Top 20 teams participated in the regatta. Six races were completed in each division on each day of the regatta in very light wind.
Washington also sent sailors to the North Fall Qualifier, hosted by Fordham, this weekend, but after a windless day allowed for no racing on Saturday, the regatta was called on Sunday after another lack of wind.
The Washington College sailing team will compete at the MAISA Women's Fall Championships, hosted by Navy, and the Jesuit Open Interconference, hosted by Fordham and Columbia, next weekend.
