Box Score Wendeborn Tallies Two Saves
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting St. Mary's (Md.) scored both goals of the match in the first half to record a 2-0 victory over host Washington College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference men's soccer match at the Washington College Lower Bermuda Field. The Seahawks improve to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Shoremen fall to 1-1-0.
The Seahawks got on the board at the 29:09 mark when Alessandro Burlew scored his second goal of the season on a blast from 25 yards out that found its way into the lower left corner of the goal. Picking up the assist was Matt Braun. James Pollock assisted on the second goal with just 4:17 left in the first half when he found Nick Tait for his first goal of the campaign. Tait was able to go through the defense, faked an initial shot, and then his shot hit the left post and bounced into the lower left corner to cap the scoring on the day.
The Shoremen held a 15-12 edge in shots and had a decisive 13-3 advantage in corner kicks, including six consecutive corners in a 1:53 span of the second half, but WC was unable to convert any of the corners. In goal, Zack Halusser pitched the shutout with five saves in his collegiate debut for the Seahawks. For the Shoremen, junior goalkeeper David Myers (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and sophomore goalkeeper Jon Wendeborn (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) played the first and second halves respectively with Wendeborn recording both saves for WC in the match.
The two teams were meeting for the first time since a 4-0 Washington win on October 23, 1996. The Shoremen now lead the all-time series 7-5-4.
Washington returns to the pitch on Saturday afternoon a 1:00 p.m. versus visiting Shenandoah in a non-conference contest.
