Thompson Helps Shoremen Seal 3-1 Win Over Bears

Tallies Goal and Assist For Career-Best Three Points; Samuels Sets Career-Best in Saves With Nine

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Junior midfielder Drew Thompson (Montclair, Va./Woodbridge) had a goal and an assist for a career-best three points and freshman goalkeeper Josh Samuels (Allentown, N.J./Allentown)  set a career-high with nine saves as visiting Washington College topped host Ursinus, 3-1, in a Centennial Conference men's soccer match at Patterson Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Shoremen improve to 8-5-0 overall with the victory and 3-3-0 in the Centennial, while the Bears fall to 1-8-3 and 0-4-2 respectively.

How It Happened
-Cody Gray put Washington ahead 1-0 at the 18:36 mark on a shot from the right side at the top of the 18 into the lower left corner of the goal on a feed from Thompson.
-The Shoremen made it 2-0 when Christian Cooke's pass from midfield bounced over the goalie's head and Chris Lewandowski pounced on the ball and put it into an empty net at 33:42.
-Ursinus had an outstanding chance to get onto the board as Brendan Werner had a one-on-one with Washington goalkeeper Samuels in the 40th minute, but Samuels made the save to preserve the two-goal lead.
-The Bears' Ryan Butler had the last scoring chance of the first half, but his shot was turned away by Samuels in the 43rd minute.
-The Shoremen almost made it 3-0 early in the second half, but the shot by Michael Holowesko just went wide to the left off of a corner kick.
-Thompson did make it 3-0 at 61:11 when he received a pass from Brian Wilkinson and blasted a shot from the left side 20 yards out into the upper left side of goal.
-Butler did get Ursinus on the board at the 66:10 mark when he received a pass from Aaron Nelson and was able to get the shot over the head of Samuels to trim the Washington lead to 3-1.
-Butler's shot to the right side of the goal was denied on a diving save by Samuels in the 84th minute to keep the score at 3-1 for the visitors.

For The Shoremen (8-5-0, 3-3-0 CC)
-Scoring: Thompson (1 goal and 1 assist), Gray (1 goal), Lewandowski (1 goal), Cooke (1 assist), Wilkinson (1 assist)
-Goalkeeper: Samuels (9 saves, 1 goal allowed, 90:00)
-Washington had 15 shots and three corner kicks in the victory.

For Ursinus (1-8-3, 0-4-2 CC)
Scoring: Butler (1 goal), Nelson (1 assist)
Goalkeeper: Vince Maiorino (5 saves, 3 goals allowed, 90:00)
-Bears took 19 shots and registered six corner kicks in the match.

Notes
-Washington has now won four straight contests and three consecutive Centennial Conference matches.
-The Shoremen are a perfect 4-0-0 in October.
-It was the first win for the Shoremen over Ursinus since a 1-0 overtime win in 2012.
