Box Score Hubley Scores 17 Points in Loss
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Swarthmore College defeated host Washington College, 64, 54, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The victory by the Garnet gave both teams identical season records of 9-15 overall and 5-12 in conference play.
Swarthmore never trailed and staked out a 30-18 halftime lead, forcing the Shorewomen into tough shots. Washington shot just 6-for-32 from the field in the first half, including a 3-for-24 mark (12.5%) from inside the three-point arc.
The Garnet maintained a lead of between eight and 13 points throughout the second half until a 6-1 spurt by the Shorewomen trimmed the margin to 51-47 on a jumper by sophomore guard Ali Grundy (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) with 4:07 to go. That was as close as the Shorewomen would get, however, as Swarthmore came away with the win.
Elle Larsen put up game-high totals of 18 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks in the win for Swarthmore. Jessica Jowdy added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Garnet. Abbey Deckard chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
Senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) led Washington with 17 points, while junior forward Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) had 11 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Grundy scored nine points for Washington.
Swarthmore shot 39% from the field in the game while holding Washington to 29% shooting. The Garnet also held a 45-34 advantage on the boards. The Shorewomen did turn the ball over 10 fewer times than the Garnet (nine to 19). The Shorewomen close out their season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Johns Hopkins.
