CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington College sailing team placed sixth of six teams in the Washington College Team Race held yesterday and today on the Chester River.
After a short delay in the morning due to a lack of wind, favorable conditions enabled a full double round robin of racing to be completed in some light breezes on Saturday. A third full double round robin was completed in a building breeze by midday Sunday. George Washington won the regatta with a 14-1 head-to-head record. Merchant Marine and Cornell both finished 10-5, but Merchant Marine took second based on winning two of its three head-to-head races with Cornell. Hobart and William Smith was fourth at 8-7, while Webb Institute was fifth at 2-13. Washington posted a 1-14 record, picking up a win against Webb during the second round robin on Saturday.
Sophomore Matt McDermaid (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach), sophomore Alex Smith (Wantagh, N.Y./General Douglas MacArthur), and sophomore Hannah Schmidt (Trappe, Md./Easton) served as Washington's skippers, while freshman Bridgette Hindt (Clayton, Del./Smyrna), freshman Allison Cochran (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana), freshman Maura Matthews (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), and sophomore Karlyn Long (Louisville, Colo./Fairview) were the team's crews.
The Washington College sailing team returns to action April 4th and 5th at the Team Race Challenge, hosted by Merchant Marine.
