Shorewomen Drop Just Two Games in Middle Four Singles Spots
GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Visiting Washington College, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, lost just four games across the middle four singles spots en route to an 8-1 Centennial Conference women's tennis victory over host Gettysburg this afternoon. The Shorewomen ran their record to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play with the win over the Bullets, who dropped to 5-8 and 1-6.
Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead by easily winning all three doubles matches. Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) breezed past Laura Gradiska and Lindsay Morris, 8-1, at No. 1, freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) beat Gillian Minnerly and Mary Cecio, 8-2, at No. 2, and junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) topped Ally Flood and Kelli Rubin, 8-3, at No. 3.
In singles, Weaver (ranked 16th in the region) rallied for a 6-7(5), 6-1, 10-1, win over Gradiska at No. 1 and the Bullets got a point at No. 6 as Flood beat senior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), 6-1, 6-1. In between, it was all Shorewomen. McIntyre downed Morris, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 and Filiopoulos beat Rubin by the same score at No. 5. Lazer and Martinez beat blanked Minnerly and Cecio at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, by identical 6-0, 6-0, scores. Martinez ran her record at No. 4 singles this spring to 13-0 with the win.
The Shorewomen, who clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament yesterday with their win over Muhlenberg and Dickinson's loss to Ursinus, return to action Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Bryn Mawr. A win Tuesday would guarantee the Shorewomen a seed of no lower than second in the tournament.
