Box Score Porteous Scores 13 Points and Records Five Steals in Shoremen Debut
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Shenandoah outscored host Washington College 42-30 in the second half to erase a 31-26 halftime deficit en route to a 68-61 win on Tuesday evening in a non-conference men's basketball game. It was the season opener for both teams.

How It Happened
- Leading 14-13 with 9:51 left in the first half, the Shoremen hit the Hornets with a 14-4 run to take a 28-17 lead with 2:49 remaining in the opening stanza on a layup by Joey Shelton. The Shoremen got their final four points in the run on lay-ins off of steals. The 11-point lead was the largest lead for either team in the game.
- Shenandoah would close out the first half by scoring nine of the final 12 points to cut the Washington lead to five at halftime, 31-26. Derrick Perry scored seven of the Hornets' nine points.
- With the scored tied 37-37 with 14:04 remaining in the second half, Shenandoah went on a 15-6 run to take its largest lead of the night at 52-43 with 8:02 remaining on a Perry jumper. The run started with a jumper by Kaimonne Douglas with 13:15 to go to give the visitors the lead for good at 39-37.
- The Shoremen would counter with a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 53-52 with 5:55 remaining on a Kevin McCormick three-pointer. WC would cut the lead to one on a pair of occasions, the other coming with 4:54 to go following a transition layup by Washington's Armand del Castillo that trimmed the Hornets lead to 55-54.
- The Hornets would close out the game by outscoring the Shoremen 13-7. Malcolm Clark gave Shenandoah a 63-54 lead with 1:17 to go following a pair of free throws. The closest the Shoremen got it the rest of the way was four points at 63-59 with 15 ticks left on two foul shots by Josh Porteous.
- Five free throws from Shenandoah and a Tas Dixon putback layup for WC provided the final margin.
For The Shoremen (0-1)
- Porteous (team-high 13 points and game-topping five steals), Shelton (team-best seven rebounds), Dallas Marshall (two steals).
- Washington had nine steals in the contest and held a 38-33 edge in rebounds.
- The Shoremen shot 36% (22-for-62) from the floor, 32% (7-for-22) from three-point range and 91% (10-for-11) from the foul line.
For Shenandoah (1-0)
- Clark (16 points, game-best 11 rebounds and team-high three steals), Douglas (16 points), Perry (16 points, 7-for-7 shooting, contest-high four blocks and team-high three steals), E.J. Baltimore (contest-high eight assists to go along with two steals).
- The Hornets shot 46% (23-for-50) from the floor and 70% (21-for-30) from the free throw stripe. Shenandoah went 1-for-14 from three-point land, a 7% clip.
- Shenandoah had two fewer turnovers than Washington, 17 for the guests and 19 for the hosts.
Notes
- Shenandoah outscored Washington in points in the paint (38-24), points off of turnovers (17-6), transition points (16-6) and bench points (34-23).
- The Shoremen had a 12-7 advantage in second chance points over the Hornets.
