Shoremen Pick Up First Win with 72-68 Victory at Cairn

Drury Paces Shoremen with 14 Points in Win

LANGHORNE, Pa. — Senior guard James Drury (Jenkintown, Pa./Germantown Academy) scored a team-high 14 points as the visiting Washington College men's basketball picked up its first win of the season with a 72-68 non-conference victory over host Cairn University this afternoon in Langhorne, Pa.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen took an early 15-9 lead in the first half on an Austin Allen lay-up with 10:48 left. The Highlanders scored 19 of the next 27 points to build a 28-23 cushion on a Zachary Dolton three-point with 20 seconds to go in the first half. A pair of Drury free throws for the Shoremen with one second to play before the intermission cut that lead down to three points at 28-25.
- The Shoremen tied the score three times early in the second half, but Cairn maintained a 49-44 edge with under 12 minutes to go. Washington then ran off the next 10 points to build a 54-49 advantage on a Joey Shelton jumper with 8:09 left. A three-pointer by Nick Shmelzer gave Washington a 57-51 lead with 6:49 to go, but Cairn then went on a 10-3 run to regain the lead at 61-60 on a pair of Dolton free throws with 3:42 to play.
- Drury and Gerroid Doughty II then exchanged lay-ups before Washington makes by Schmelzer and Shelton gave Washington a 66-63 lead with 2:11 to go. Brennan Addley got the Highlanders back to within a point at 66-65 on a put-back with 1:54 left.
- Drury made one of two free throws for the Shoremen with 1:39 left to give Washington a 67-65 advantage, but Dolton then knocked down a three-pointer with 1:35 remaining to put Cairn in front, 68-67, with 1:10 to go. Schmelzer missed a three-pointer for the Shoremen with 43 seconds left, but Doughy was called for a charge on the other end to give the ball back to the Shoremen.
- Shelton was fouled by Julian Collazo with 24 seconds left and sank both free throws to put Washington back in front, 69-68. Addley was called for traveling for Cairn with 11 seconds remaining. Doughty was forced to foul with eight seconds on the clock. Josh Porteous missed his first free throw for the Shoremen before the Highlanders called timeout.
- Porteous then missed the second free throw and Dolton secured the rebound, but Collazo lost the ball out of bounds with four seconds remaining. Dolton then fouled with three seconds to go, putting Shelton at the line. Shelton missed his first free throw, but made the second for a 70-68 advantage. Collazo caught the ball on the ensuing inbounds pass just shy of midcourt, but stepped out of bounds to give the ball back to the Shoremen. After Collazo was called for a technical, Schmelzer knocked down a pair of free throws with two seconds to go to provide the final margin at 72-68.  

For the Shoremen (1-1)
- Drury (14 points); Shelton (11 points, 3 steals); Schmelzer (10 points); Allen (7 points, 6 rebounds)
- The Shoremen shot 38% from the field in the game, but committed seven fewer turnovers than the Highlanders (15 to 22). Washington had a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

For Cairn (1-1)
- Dolton (16 points, 7 rebounds); Addley (14 points, 16 rebounds); Collazo (12 points); Doughty (10 points)
- Cairn shot 53% from the field and held a 42-33 rebounding advantage, but shot just 59% (10-for-17) at the foul line to go along with the 22 turnovers.

Notes
- The game was a contrast in minutes distribution; the Shoremen played 14 players in the game, with only Shelton (24), Porteous (23), and Tas Dixon (21) playing 20 minutes or more. Cairn played nine players and all five of the Highlanders' starters logged 28 or more minutes; Doughty (35), Dolton (33), Addley (33), and Collazo (33) all played 33 minutes or more.
