Box Score Shelton Nets 12 Points in Loss for Shoremen
SWARTHMORE, Pa. — Host Swarthmore College held a commanding 48-27 rebounding advantage en route to a 74-61 win over visiting Washington College in the Centennial Conference men's basketball opener for both schools tonight inside Tarble Pavilion.

How It Happened
- An early 6-0 lead for the Shoremen turned into a 10-6 advantage for the Garnet with a run capped off by a Zac O'Dell lay-up with 14:04 left in the first half. Swarthmore later used a 9-1 spurt to open up a 30-21 advantage on a Chris Bourne lay-up with 5:24 on the clock. A three-pointer by Zack Yonda with 3:14 left gave the Garnet their first double-digit lead of the game at 34-23. The Garnet went on to lead by as many as 13 points later in the half and took a 40-28 advantage into halftime.
- The Garnet led by double figures through most of the second half, taking their biggest lead of the game at 61-44 on a Cam Wiley lay-up with 9:02 left. The Shoremen finally cut the deficit under 10 on an Austin Allen free throw with 4:46 to go to set the score at 65-56. Armand del Castillo made a free throw 20 seconds later to pull Washington to within eight.
- Wiley boosted the lead back to 10 with a pair of free throws on the other end three seconds later. Those two points were the first of six straight for the Garnet, stuffing the Shoremen's comeback attempt.

- The Shoremen shot 35% from the field in the loss, but committed 11 fewer turnovers than the Garnet (7 to 18). That keyed a 17-6 advantage in points off turnovers for Washington.
For Swarthmore (3-0, 1-0 Centennial Conference)
- Yonda (12 points, 9 rebounds); Bourne (11 points); Wiley (11 points); Matt Brennan (9 points); Nate Shafer (5 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks)
- The Garnet's big rebounding advantage helped them to a 9-2 advantage in second-chance points. They shot 46% from the field in the game.
