Box Score Shelton Pours in 20 Points in Loss for Shoremen
CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Matt Knowles scored the game-winning basket with nine seconds remaining in overtime as visiting Ursinus College recorded an 86-85 Centennial Conference men's basketball win over host Washington College tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The Bears picked up the win despite the Shoremen rallying from a 15-point second-half deficit to force the overtime.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen held an early 19-14 lead before the Bears went on a 13-1 run to surge ahead, 27-20, on lay-up by Zach Quattro with 6:55 left in the first half. Washington later used an 8-2 spurt to even the game at 35-35 on a jump shot and free throw by Joey Shelton with 1:12 remaining in the period. Back-to-back three-pointers by Eric Williams, Jr. upped the Bears lead to 41-35 with 27 seconds to go. A Shelton jumper with two seconds left got the Shoremen back to within four points before the intermission.
- The Bears opened the second half with an 18-7 run to build a 59-44 cushion on a Joseph LoStracco lay-up with 13:46 remaining.
- The Shoremen later used a 10-2 run to cut the lead all the way down to one point on a lay-up and free throw by Shelton with 2:11 remaining, trimming the margin to 75-74. Two free throws by Quattro on the other end pushed the lead to three at 77-74 with 1:42 left. A Marshall lay-up with 1:32 remaining cut the lead back to one at 77-76. Marshall then missed two free throws with 44 seconds to go, but a traveling violation by Knowles with 24 seconds left gave the ball back to the Shoremen.
- Tas Dixon was fouled on a driving lay-up with three seconds to go in regulation. Dixon missed the first free throw, but sank the second to even the game at 77-77 for the Shoremen, who called timeout immediately after the make. A long Brian Rafferty three-pointer as time expired caromed off the backboard for the Bears as the game headed to overtime.
- Remi Janicot and Alec Lewis traded buckets for the Bears and the Shoremen, respectively, to open the overtime. Lewis then sank two free throws to put the Shoremen in front, 81-79, with 3:44 to go. A three-pointer by Williams then gave Ursinus an 82-81 lead with 3:16 to play, while a pair of James Drury free throws put Washington back ahead by one with 2:21 left. Shane Stark made two free throws for Ursinus at the 1:27 mark, but Shelton made a lay-up with 1:10 to go for an 85-84 Washington lead.
- Williams misfired on a three-pointer during the next Ursinus possession with 55 seconds to go and Drury missed a long three for the Shoremen on the other end with 31 seconds left. Knowles made his game-winning bucket on the next Bear possession. Washington called timeout once the ball was advanced past midcourt and inbounded the ball with five seconds left. A jumper by Josh Porteous with two seconds left came up empty as Ursinus held on for the win.
For the Shoremen (5-8, 1-5 Centennial Conference)
- Shelton (20 points); Drury (14 points, 6 rebounds); Lewis (13 points, 4 steals); Dallas Marshall (11 points)
- The Shoremen forced 25 Ursinus turnovers in the game and shot 8-for-15 from three-point range. Overall, they shot 45.5% from the field, but just 17-for-27 at the free-throw line. Washington held a 52-22 advantage in bench points and a 30-14 spread in points off turnovers.
For Ursinus (7-6, 4-2 Centennial Conference)
- Quattro (21 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks); Janicot (17 points, 2 blocks); Williams (17 points, 5-for-8 three-pointers)
- Ursinus shot 57.9% from the field, 9-for-21 from three point range, and 11-for-14 at the foul line. The Bears held a 39-26 rebounding advantage and a 42-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Notes
- Shelton was named the Chestertown McDonald's Shoremen Player of the Game on the Goose Nation TV webcast of the game. Fifteen of his 20 points in the game came after halftime.
