Porteous Scores 13 Points, Hands Out Seven Assists To Tie Career-Best and Records Three Steals

TOWSON, Md. – Visiting Washington College picked up its first win of the season as they never trailed in an 80-58 win over host Goucher on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Decker SRC.  The 22-point victory is the largest margin of victory for an Aaron Goodman coached squad at Washington and is the team's first victory of 20 or more since a 76-47 win at Haverford on December 3, 2013.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen scored the game's first seven points to take a 7-0 lead 86 seconds into the game on a traditional three-point play by Austin Allen.  Allen scored five of the seven points. 
- Goucher cut the lead to 9-6 with 15:27 remaining on two free throws by Devon Esslinger. 
- Washington would answer with an 8-1 run to take its first double digit lead of the game at 17-7 with 12:43 to go in the first on a three-pointer by Nick Schmelzer.  The run was started by a steal and layup by Tas Dixon. 
- Leading 26-12, the Shoremen scored 14 of the next 21 points to take a 40-19 lead on a triple by Alec Lewis with 4:13 left in the first half.
- The Shoremen would take a 47-31 lead into halftime.
- In the second half, WC scored the first 14 points of the half to take a 61-31 lead with 13:25 remaining in the contest on a three by Kevin McCormick.
- Washington scored 23 of the first 25 points of the second half to take a 70-33 lead with 10:25 to go on a lay-in by Jack Greer.  The 37-point lead was the biggest for the Shoremen in the win.
- The Gophers outscored the Shoremen, 25-10, the rest of the way to provide the final margin.

For The Shoremen (1-1)
- Josh Porteous (13 points and seven assists to lead all players in both categories and tied his career-best in helpers, three steals to tie for game-high), Austin Allen (six rebounds to lead all players), Dallas Marshall (three steals).
- The Shoremen shot 48% (31-for-64) from the floor, 53% (12-for-23) from three-point range and 55% (6-for-11) from the foul line. 
- Washington had 24 turnovers in the contest, while outrebounding the Gophers by a 46-27 count.
- WC outscored Goucher 14-9 in second-chance points, 23-14 in points off of turnovers and 42-23 in bench points.

For Goucher (0-3)
- Dwayne Morton (12 points), Timmy O'Farrell (11 points and five rebounds) and Esslinger (11 points).
- The Gophers shot 37% (19-for-52) from the floor, 25% (4-for-16) from three-point range and 64% (16-for-25) from the free throw stripe. 
- The Gophers had 24 turnovers in the game.

Notes
- The Shoremen had 21 assists on 31 made baskets in the victory.
- Prior to today, the biggest margin of victory for a Goodman team was last November 28 at Frostburg State in an 89-76 victory.
- The last time a Shoremen squad made 12 triples in a game was on January 14, 2016 versus Muhlenberg.
- Goucher's Gabe Ceribelli played 1 1/2 years for the Shoremen, playing the entire 2015-16 season and the first part of the 2016-17 season for Washington.  He was held scoreless by the Shoremen this afternoon.
