Win Gives Shoremen Home Match in Centennial Tournament

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Freshman August Meriot (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) battled back from dropping his first set at No. 6 singles to win the third in a tie-breaker, giving the host Washington College men's tennis team a 5-4 Centennial Conference win over Franklin & Marshall today in the regular season finale for both teams. The win gave the Shoremen (12-5, 6-3 Centennial), who are ranked 18th in the Atlantic South Region, home-court advantage in Wednesday's Centennial Conference Tournament first-round match against F&M (14th in region, 6-9 overall, 5-4 Centennial).

Washington College 5, Franklin & Marshall 4

Doubles
- Jack Rothman and Inigo Flores, ranked 15th in the region in doubles, were 8-5 winners over Chris Salisbury and Jake Sandler at No. 1 for a 1-0 F&M lead.
- The Diplomats also won, 8-4, at No. 3 thanks to an Isaac Salas and Andrew Pace victory over Justin Panepinto and Zack Novick.
- The Shoremen picked up a point at No. 3 as Jeremy Novick and Luke Weaver beat Zack Levin and Will Samuels, 8-6. 

Singles
- The Diplomats moved out to a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-1, victory by Flores over Zack Novick at No. 4.
- The Shoremen then won the next three singles matches to finish to take a 4-3 lead. Sandler beat Salas, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2, Salisbury topped Rothman, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1, and Weaver downed Levin, 7-6(3), 6-1, at No. 3.
- Samuels evened the score for F&M with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, win against Jeremy Novick at No. 5.
- Meriot battled back for a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) victory against Pace at No. 6 to give the Shoremen the win.
