Porteous Cans Game-Winning Three-Pointer with Two Seconds Left

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Sophomore guard Josh Porteous (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Holy Trinity Episcopal) drained a three-pointer with two seconds left in the game and it proved to be the game-winning basket as host Washington College rallied from 14 points down in the second half to nip visiting Haverford, 79-77, on Wednesday evening in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game at the Cain Athletic Center.  The Shoremen, who snapped a six-game losing streak to the Fords, improve to 6-14 overall and 3-10 in the Centennial, while the Fords drop to 6-14 and 2-11 respectively.

How It Happened
- Following a missed layup by Washington, Haverford got a fast-break layup by Kahlil Garnes with 3:36 left in the second to give the Fords a 72-65 lead. 
- The Shoremen would begin their 14-5 game-closing run on a tip-in by Dallas Marshall with 3:18 remaining to trim the Haverford lead to 72-67.  Marshall would score six straight points for the hosts as his layup with 1:55 to go cut the Fords' lead to 72-71.
- Jonathan Lang would make a jumper on Haverford's next possession to push the lead to 74-71 with 1:32 left before Washington would tie the game at 74-74 on an Alec Lewis three-pointer with 1:16 to go.
- Garnes would make one-of-two from the free throw line with 59.7 seconds left to give Haverford a 75-74 lead.  But the Shoremen would answer back on a driving layup by Lewis to give WC its first lead since early in the first half at 76-75 with 41 ticks left
- Haverford would respond as Lang made a driving layup of his own to give the Fords a 77-76 lead with 25 seconds left.
- On the next possession, Marshall found Porteous on the left side and drain the triple with two seconds left to put the Shoremen ahead 79-77.
- The Fords' last possession ended in a turnover as the baseball pass from Joe Hartman was picked off by Porteous and he ran out the clock to complete the comeback.
- In the first half, the Shoremen took a 15-11 lead with 13:06 remaining on a Porteous layup before the Fords went on an 8-0 run to take a 19-15 lead with 11:06 left on a Lang three.  50 seconds earlier, Lang netted a three to give the Fords a 16-15 lead.
- Leading 22-19 with 9:22 left in the opening stanza, the Fords outscored the Shoremen 21-14 the rest of the first half to take a 43-33 lead into halftime.  Michael Wiper knocked down a three for the guests with 51 seconds left to cap the first half scoring.
- Haverford took its biggest lead of the game 44 seconds into the second half a Garnes transition layup of 14 points at 47-33.
- WC would go on a 29-17 run to reduce the Haverford lead to just two at 64-62 with 7:47 remaining on a Jack Greer jumper.
- Ahead 66-64, Haverford would score six of the next seven points to grab a 72-65 lead on a Garnes transition lay-in.

For The Shoremen (6-14, 3-10 CC)
- Marshall (team-highs of 18 points, 7-for-10 shooting and seven rebounds and tied for team-best in assists with three), Tas Dixon (15 points), Lewis (season-best 14 points), Porteous (16 points, career-best six rebounds, three assists to tie for team-high and three steals).
- Washington had 14 steals and forced 19 Haverford turnovers in the contest.  The Shoremen coughed it up only seven times in the victory.
- The Shoremen outscored the Fords in points off of turnovers (23-9).
- The Shoremen shot 50% (29-for-58) from the floor, 43% (6-for-14) from three-point range and 60% (15-for-25) from the foul line. 

For Haverford (6-14, 2-11 CC)
- Lang (game-bests of 22 points and six assists, shot 4-for-7 from three and 7-for-10 overall), Jack Cork (10 points and game-topping nine rebounds).
- The Fords shot 53% (30-for-57) from the floor, 37% (7-for-19) from three-point range and 63% (10-for-16) from the free throw stripe.    
- Haverford outscored Washington 14-10 in second chance points, 42-30 in points in the paint, 11-6 in transition points and 23-9 in bench points while holding a 37-27 edge in rebounds.
- The Fords had only one steal in the game.

Notes
- Porteous was named the Chestertown McDonald's Shoremen Player of the Game on the Goose Nation TV webcast of the game.
- It was the Shoremen's first win over the Fords since an 81-66 win in Chestertown on December 2, 2014 and just the WC's fifth win in the last 30 meetings versus Haverford.  Washington leads the all-time series 52-41.
- Haverford shot 7-for-13 from three-point range in the first half, but shot 0-for-6 in the second half.  The Fords led for 32:37 in the game, while the Shoremen led for just 3:47.
- The Shoremen had their third game of the season and second straight of shooting 50% or better from the floor.
- Marshall had his second straight game of 18 points as he also scored 18 versus Muhlenberg this past Saturday.
