Carter Drains Three-Pointer with 10 Seconds Left for Winning Basket

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Visiting Washington College trailed 75-71 with a minute to go in overtime before scoring the final six points of the contest on two three-point baskets with the winning hoop coming from junior guard Derrick Carter (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) with 10 seconds left to come away with a 77-75 overtime win over host St. Mary's (Md.) on Friday night in a non-conference men's basketball game on Ed Cole Court at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena in the Dan Greene/Wayne Cook Memorial Tournament.  It was the first game of the 2019-20 season for both squads.

How It Happened
- After spotting the Seahawks seven of the game's first nine points, the Shoremen answered with a 21-12 run to take a 23-19 lead with 8:25 to go on a three-pointer by Barry McCormick. 
- St. Mary's would answer with a 12-2 run of its own to go ahead 31-25 with 4:34 remaining in the first half on a Gary Grant three-point basket.
- The Seahawks would take a 37-30 lead into the halftime break as the hosts shot 53.8% in the first half.
- Washington canned two triples in the first 55 seconds of the second half to cut the lead to 37-36 on an Alec Lewis three.  Lewis would put WC ahead with another three with 17:54 remaining in the second half at 39-37 as part of a 9-0 run to open the second half.
- Between the 17:54 mark and with 4:50 left in the second half, the largest lead by either team was four points which the Shoremen held on three occasions.
- Down 64-60 with 4:50 to go, St. Mary's scored five unanswered points to take a 65-64 lead with 3:32 remaining on a Grant lay-in.
- With the scored tied 67-67 with 18 seconds left, Tray Wright would make one-of-two free throws to give the Shoremen a 68-67 lead.  On the next possession, Justin Milstead drew the foul with five ticks left and made the second free throw to tie it at 68-68 to force overtime. 
- In overtime, the Seahawks led 75-71 with 2:01 to go following a free throw by Reggie Rouse.  Grant had a chance to put the Seahawks up by six with just under a minute left, but missed a layup and McCormick grabbed the rebound.
- On the ensuing WC possession, Dallas Marshall netted a three from the right corner to cut the St. Mary's lead to one, 75-74 with 44 ticks left.  St. Mary's would miss a jumper with 27 seconds left Carter grabbed the rebound.
- Carter would receive a pass from Dilyn Becker with 10 seconds left and his three from the right side of the arc went through the net to give the Shoremen a two-point lead.  Daniel Brown would notch a steal of the Seahawks last possession to end it.

For The Shoremen (1-0)
- Lewis (team-high 17 points), Wright (game-best 12 rebounds and four assists to tie for game-high), Brown (10 points and contest-best three steals), Marshall (11 points), McCormick (11 points)
- The Shoremen outscored the Seahawks in second chance points, 10-7.
- The Shoremen shot 37% (25-for-68) from the floor, 37% (11-for-30) from three-point range and 76% (16-for-21) from the foul line. 
- Washington had 22 turnovers.
- WC held a 45-41 advantage on the boards.

For St. Mary's (Md.) (0-1)
- Grant (game-best 22 points) Miles Gillette (21 points, team-topping nine rebounds and two steals), Milstead (14 points), Rouse (four assists and two steals)
- The Seahawks shot 46% (26-for-57) from the floor, 40% (6-for-15) from three-point range and 49% (17-for-35) from the free throw stripe, while committing 19 turnovers 
- St. Mary's outscored Washington in bench points, 28-25, points off turnovers, 23-18, points in the paint, 28-16, and transition points, 27-13.

Notes
- The Shoremen have won two straight season openers as last year they won 86-76 at Cairn.
- Washington now leads the all-time series versus St. Mary's 20-7.
- Tonight was the first meeting between the in-state schools since 2011-12.

- Second and final game for the Shoremen at the tournament.
- Randolph-Macon reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division III Tournament last season where they lost to WC's Centennial Conference rival Swarthmore, 58-57.
- Just the second meeting between the two schools in the last 48 years.  The two schools played 22 times from 1945-46 through 1970-71.  Randolph-Macon won during the 2012-13 season in the only meeting since the end of the 1970-71 season.
