Shorewomen Fall Twice On Opening Day Of Tournament In Salisbury

DiMarcello Picks Up Four Hits On The Day

SALISBURY, Md. — The Washington College softball team dropped a pair of games today at Sea Gull Softball Stadium on the opening day of the Salisbury University Softball Tournament in Salisbury, Maryland. The Shorewomen fell to the host Seagulls 13-1 in the first game which ended after six innings due to the eight run rule, before falling to Clarkson 2-1 later in the afternoon.

Salisbury 13, Washington College 1 (6 innings)

How It Happened
- Washington put runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the first, but a fly out followed by a double play ended the inning.
- Salisbury took the lead in the top of the second inning when Sami Mumford reached on a dropped fly ball and advanced to third on the play, which allowed Amelia Trotter and Kaleigh Edwards to score to give the Seagulls a 2-0 lead. Mumford would then score to make it 3-0 on a groundout to short from Cat Ramagnano.
- The Shorewomen loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning and picked up a run when Leah Stokes drew a bases loaded walk, forcing home Cristen Quillen to cut the lead to 3-1. The next two batters were then retired on a force out at home and a line out to center field. 
- The Seagulls got the run back in the top of the third to push the lead to 4-1 when Emily Allen hit a two out, solo home run to left field.
- Washington would again start the bottom of the third by getting runners to second and third with nobody away, but a ground ball double play and a groundout to short ended the inning.
- The Seagulls picked up three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. B.K. Hewitt scored from first base on a muffed throw following a sacrifice bunt attempt from Mumford to extend the lead to 5-1. A sacrifice fly to right field from Dakotah Fraley brought home Lilly Wingo to give Salisbury a 6-1 lead, and a single through the left side from Jillian Jones chased home Ramagnano, who reached base earlier in the inning by way of a separate muffed throw, to push the lead to 7-1.
- Allen led off the fifth inning with her second solo home run of the afternoon to make it an 8-1 lead for Salisbury.
- The Seagulls scored five more runs in the top of the sixth inning to set the score at 13-1 and provide the final margin.  

For the Shorewomen (1-1)
- Hitting: Grace Moery (2-for-3, double), Maddie Bennett (2-for-3, double), Rachel DiMarcello (2-for-3), Stokes (walk, RBI), Quillen (run).
- Pitching: Bennett (loss, 1-1, 4.2 innings, four hits, seven runs, three earned runs, two walks, three strikeouts), Cassidy Predale (1.1 innings, four hits, six runs, three walks, zero strikeouts).
- The Shorewomen had nine hits in the loss, drew three walks, and left nine runners on base.
- Washington committed three errors, leading to four unearned Seagulls runs.

For Salisbury (5-1)
- Hitting: Allen (3-for-4, two home runs, three RBI's, two runs), Jones (2-for-4, two RBI's, run), Ramagnano (RBI, walk, two runs), Trotter (hit, RBI, walk, run), Wingo (two walks, two runs), Fraley (walk, RBI, run), Mumford (RBI, run).
- Pitching: Alexis Layton (two innings, six hits, one run, two walks, zero strikeouts), Shannon Powell (win, 2-0, four innings, three hits, zero runs, one walk, zero strikeouts).
- The Seagulls had eight hits in the win, drew five walks, and left three runners on base.
- Salisbury played a clean game defensively, committing zero errors.

Notes
- Layton pitched for Washington during the 2016 season, appearing in 10 games.

Clarkson 2, Washington College 1

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen took the lead in the top of the third inning when DiMarcello ripped a two out double down the left field line, bringing in Moery to put Washington up 1-0.
- Clarkson took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Michele Winn doubled up the middle, bringing in Danielle Whitham, who reached base by way of a throwing error, and Raeanna Dunn to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead.
- Washington only got one baserunner the rest of the game courtesy of a single from DiMarcello in the top of the sixth inning.  

For the Shorewomen (1-2)
- Hitting: DiMarcello (2-for-3, double, RBI), Alyssa Vieira (2-for-3, stolen base), Moery (hit, run).
- Pitching: Rachel Butler (loss, 0-1, six innings, four hits, two runs, one earned run, zero walks, five strikeouts).
- The Shorewomen picked up five hits in the loss, did not draw a walk, and left three runners on base.
- Washington committed one error, leading to one unearned run for the Golden Knights.

For Clarkson (1-1)
- Hitting: Winn (double, two RBI's), Dunn (2-for-3, run, stolen base), Whitham (run), Maddie Brink (stolen base).
- Pitching: Olivia Zoeller (win, 1-0, seven innings, five hits, one run, zero walks, six strikeouts).
- The Golden Knights picked up four hits in the win, did not draw a walk, and left one runner on base.
- Clarkson played a clean defensive game, committing zero errors.

Notes
- Washington out hit both of their opponents on the day.
