GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Junior forward Daniel Brown drilled a game-winning trifecta with two seconds remaining in double-overtime, lifting the Washington College men's basketball team to a thrilling, 100-99 double-overtime victory against Gettysburg on Saturday evening at Bream Gymnasium.
Six Shoremen reached double-figures in scoring for the first time this season and the squad has now won two straight league contests.
How It Happened
- The hosts jumped out to an early 12-4 advantage but the Shoremen went on a 10-2 run to knot the score at 14 as Dilyn Becker and Logan Bunch capped the stretch with consecutive layups.
- The game was tied for the final time of the opening half at 19-all after Bunch converted a layup at the 5:12 mark.
- The Bullets went up five, 28-23, after a trey by Nick Antolini but Brown and Tray Wright both made a pair from the line to bring the visitors within just a point at 28-27 with :40 on the clock.
- Gettysburg settled for a 30-28 halftime advantage after Wright made 1-of-2 from the stripe with 2.7 seconds left.
- Washington fell behind by eight points after a three-pointer by Nick Lord made it 39-31 at the 16:53 mark, however, the Shoremen stormed back with a 10-2 burst that evened the contest at 41-41 with 14:36 left.
-Austin Allen ignited the run with eight points during the pivotal stretch, including a four-point play on a left-corner three to tie the contest.
- The Shoremen continued to play from behind as they trailed 55-47 after a layup. Down 57-50 midway through the second half, the visitors went on a 12-4 run to take their first lead of the game, 62-61, after Carter splashed a triple from the right wing. The game went back-and-forth until Alec Lewis spotted the Shoremen a 75-70 advantage with a trifecta from the left wing with 1:40 left. Washington still led 76-72 after Allen went 1-of-2 from the line with 23.4 left, but Lord hit a three with 10.8 to go, bringing the hosts within a point.
- Becker made just 1-of-2 from the line with eight seconds left, setting up a game-tying layup by Leder with two ticks left in regulation and ultimately sending the game into overtime.
- Washington took an 86-80 lead in the first extra session as Becker hit consecutive treys. The Shoremen led 88-84 after a jumper by Allen in the corner but Antolini hit a clutch shot from long-range to bring the hosts within 88-87. Allen was fouled and went 1-of-2 from the line to set up another game-tying layup by Gettysburg, this time by Lord with 13 seconds left. Wright had a chance to win it for the Shoremen but misfired just before the buzzer.
- Lewis got Washington off to a great start as he stuck a right wing three for the first points of the second overtime. The hosts responded with an 8-2 run to claim a 97-94 advantage with under a minute left.
- Allen then came up big as he hit a baseline jumper and was fouled on the shot with 41.6 left. Allen made the free throw to even the game at 97-97. Lord made two free throws to give the Bullets a 99-97 edge with 17.2 on the clock, setting the stage for Brown's heroics.
- Brown released the game-winning shot from the left wing, silencing the home crowd as it banked off the glass and through the net with 2.2 left. Following a timeout, Brown blocked a desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer to give the Shoremen a huge victory.
For the Shoremen (5-10 Overall, 3-5 Centennial Conference)
- Allen (19 points, seven rebounds, six assists) and Lewis (19 points, team-high 11 rebounds, 5-for-9 from long-distance) paced a balanced scoring attack.
- Carter came off the bench to score 17 points (4-for-7 from long-range) in just 19 minutes.
- Wright (eight boards, six assists, three steals) and Becker each produced 14 points while Brown (10 points, six boards, three blocks) was also in double-digits.
- The Shoremen went 34-of-72 (47.2 percent) from the floor, swished 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) of their treys, and were 19-for-29 (65.5 percent) from the line.
- Washington is now 2-1 in overtime contests this season.
For Gettysburg (10-5 Overall, 4-4 Centennial Conference)
- Antolini led all players with 28 points on 10-of-22 shooting and added a team-best 11 rebounds.
- Leder added 20 points, five rebounds and six assists while Lord (14 points) and Avery Close (12 points, six rebounds) were also in double-figures.
- The Bullets shot 46.6 percent (34-for-73), were 10-of-27 (37 percent) from downtown, and converted 21-of-24 (87.5 percent) of their attempts from the stripe.
