#1 Garnet Take Control Late to Prevail Against Shoremen, 77-66

Brown Scores 15 Points to Lead Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting #1 Swarthmore outscored host Washington College 14-5 in the final 5:35 of the second half to turn a 63-61 lead into a 77-66 win on Wednesday night at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference men's basketball action.  The top ranked Garnet improve to 18-0 overall and 11-0 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen fall to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in the Centennial.

How It Happened
- Washington led 21-17 with 7:03 left in the first half on a Derrick Carter three-pointer before Swarthmore responded with eight straight point to take a 25-21 lead with 4:00 remaining in the opening half on two free throws by Vinny Deangelo.
- The Shoremen would finish the half strong as they outscored the Garnet, 11-2 in the final four minutes to take a 32-27 lead into halftime.  Austin Allen would made a layup to knot the game at 27-27 with 1:59 remaining and 34 ticks later Alec Lewis would can a three to put the hosts ahead 30-27.  Lewis would cap the scoring with 52 seconds to go in the first to give WC a five-point advantage into halftime as Washington shot 50% in the opening stanza.
- In the second half, the Garnet would score 11 of the first 16 points to tie the game at 38-38 with 15:46 to go on a Nate Shafer traditional three-point play as Shafer scored seven of the 11 points for Swarthmore during the stretch.
- Leading 45-43 with 13:53 left following a Lewis jumper, the Garnet took the lead for good with a 10-0 run that was capped by a Shafer lay-in with 10:33 left.  Zac O'Dell put Swarthmore ahead for good on a conventional three-point play with 11:56 left at 47-45.
- Ahead 56-52 with 8:33 to go, Swarthmore scored seven unanswered points to take its first double-digit lead of the night at 63-52 with 7:09 to go on two Conor Harkins free throws.
- Washington would counter with nine straight points to trim the lead to just two at 63-61 with 5:35 to go on a second chance layup by Daniel Brown.
- After a Swarthmore miss, Washington had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Shafer blocked Dilyn Becker's shot with 4:56 remaining and Harkins grabbed the rebound.  Harkins was fouled going up the court and sank two from the line to make it 65-61 with 4:51 to go to begin the game-closing 14-5 run.
- Shafer would put the visitors ahead by eight, 69-61, with 2:59 left on a layup and the closest Washington would get the rest of the game was six points on two occasions.  In the final 1:42, the Garnet went 6-for-8 from the foul line to put the contest away.

For The Shoremen (6-12, 4-7 CC)
- Brown (15 points to tie for game-high), Dallas Marshall (12 points), Lewis (10 points), Tray Wright (game-high five assists), Logan Bunch (six rebounds)
- The Shoremen shot 47% (27-for-57) from the floor, 27% (4-for-15) from three-point range and 57% (8-for-14) from the foul line. 
- Washington outscored the Garnet in bench points (19-15), transition points (7-2) and points off turnovers (16-10).
- The Shoremen had 12 turnovers in the game.

For #1 Swarthmore (18-0, 11-0 CC)
- Shafer (14 points, six rebounds and game-best three blocks), O'Dell (11 points, six rebounds and two blocks), Deangelo (15 points), Colin Shaw (13 points), Harkins (12 points), George Visconti (10 points)
- The Garnet shot 53% (25-for-47) from the floor including 16-for-24 in the second half for 67%, 20% (2-for-10) from three-point range and 78% (25-for-32) from the free throw stripe.    
- Swarthmore outscored WC 7-2 in second-chance points and 42-36 in points in the paint.
- The Garnet had 12 turnovers in the contest, while outrebounding the hosts 33-27.

- Brown was named the Goose Nation TV Shoremen Player of the Game.
