Gettysburg, PA – The Washington College men's swimming team opened the 2021-22 season with a tri meet against Gettysburg and Dickinson. The squad put on an impressive display of their speed and depth against Gettysburg and triumphed over Dickinson.
Several very impressive races were turned in by the Shoremen . Freshman CJ Dunker debuted her college career with a stunning last 100 meters in the 1,000 freestyle overtaking three swimmers to place second overall. Sophomore Bianti Danaj fought to a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle and a second-place result in the 100 butterfly. Washington College Swimming history was re-written six times throughout the course of this first meet. Freshman Zach Affeldt made a statement by winning the 100 and 200 breaststroke, with the tenth and sixth-fastest times in program history. He was also the runner-up in the 200 individual medley with the 10th fastest time in history. Junior co-captain Gage Mandrell expanded his arsenal of events getting second in the 50 freestyle (10th fastest time all-time). He was also second in the 100 backstroke, grabbing the fifth-fastest result of all-time. Mandrell was also the runner-up in the 200 backstroke with the third fastest time in school history. Finally, the 400 freestyle relay team of Danaj, co-captain Nate Braddock , Mandrell and freshman Chase Hensen astonished the pool with Hensen fighting the entire leg and overtaking Gettysburg in the last five yards. Hensen also took second in the 100 breaststroke just behind Affeldt.
