Chestertown, Md – The Washington College men's swimming team had a solid showing but were defeated by the No. 24 ranked Swarthmore Garnet, 139-66, in a Centennial Conference dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen fall to 1-2 (1-2 C.C.) while the Garnet improve to 3-1 (3-1 C.C.)
The Shoremen set a new pool record with a time of 3:32.64 in the 400 medley relay to open the day. Sophomore Benjamin Wilson led-off and was followed by freshman Zach Affeldt, sophomore Bianti Danaj and junior Gage Mandrell.
Mandrell came back later to win the 200 freestyle in 1:44.67, the eighth-fastest time in school history.
Affeldt also had a historic day as the newcomer set a new Washington College mark in the 100 individual medley after taking third in 54.69. He came back later and captured the 400 individual medley in the ninth-best time in school history (4:17.87).
Danaj was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle as he touched the wall in 22.05.
Freshman Jack Poleto was impressive in the 1000 freestyle as he clocked in with a second-place time of 10:18.13.
Freshmen Grayson Wright and Chase Hensen turned in third-place performances in the 200 butterfly (2:08.35) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.63) respectively.
An incredible six other performers broke into school history books in the 100 individual medley. Danaj (#3, 56.09), Henson (#6, 56.73), Wilson (#7, 57.60), freshman William Schmidt (#8, 57.91), senior Nate Braddock (#9, 57.94) and sophomore Jay Dadhania (#10, 58.04).
The 200 free relay squad of Danaj, Mandrell, Wilson and Schmidt was second in 1:28.16.
Wilson also turned in the sixth-fastest time in school history in the 100 backstroke (53.60)
The Shoremen will host Salisbury next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
