Shorewomen Split Two Games at Salisbury Tournament

Edge Lynchburg 4-3 and Fall to Rowan, 8-0

SALISBURY, Md. – The Washington College softball team split a pair of games at the Salisbury Tournament on Saturday at the Parker Complex.  The Shorewomen held off of a late Lynchburg rally to win 4-3 in the team's first game before falling to Rowan, 8-0, in six innings due to the eight-run rule in the second game.  WC is now 2-4 on the year, while Lynchburg is 6-3 and Rowan is 2-1.

How It Happened
- The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Washington scored all of its runs in the game.  With nobody out, Hannah Solge singled to centerfield to score Amelia Mazza to make it 1-0.  With two outs, the Shorewomen scored three times to take a 4-0 lead.  Alyssa Vieira and Lexie Witmer both scored on a throwing error to give WC a three-run lead and the outburst was capped by a Rachel DiMarcello base hit to chase in Megan Robbins.
- Lynchburg got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out sacrifice fly to center by Lexi Powell that plated Ashley Haile.
- Down 4-1, the Hornets scored twice in their last at bat in the bottom of the seventh and had the winning run on first base before the rally fell short.  With one away, Karle Cundiff hit a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Olivia Herman on a sac fly to trim the lead to 4-2.  With two outs, Ashley Hailey scored on an error to trim the lead to 4-3 and Gracie Dooley represented the tying run at third.  However, Washington pitcher Lexi Barnhart got Powell to fly out to left to end the game.

For The Shorewomen (2-3)
- Hitting: Witmer (2-for-4)
- Pitching: Barnhart (win 2-2, complete game, eight hits, three runs, two earned, four walks, four strikeouts)
- Washington committed one error in game one, leading to one Lynchburg run.
- The Shorewomen had six hits and drew zero walks in the game, while leaving five on base.

For Lynchburg (6-3)
- Hitting: Hailey (2-for-3, two runs), Powell (2-for-4, RBI)
- Pitching: Angela Sperandeo (loss 0-2, four-plus innings, three hits, two runs, zero earned, zero walks, one strikeout)
- Lynchburg totaled four errors in the opener, leading to all four WC runs.
- The Hornets had eight hits, had three reach on hit by pitch and four three walks, while stranding 13 on base.

Notes
- It was the first meeting between the two schools in softball.

Rowan 8 Washington College 0 (Game 2 – Six Innings)

How It Happened
- The Profs scored with two away in the top of the first when Payton McNair scored via a passed ball.
- Catherine Thomas extended Rowan's lead to 4-0 two innings later when she cleared the bases on a single to center that scored McNair, Morgan Zane and Mariah Wysocki with two outs.
- Korie Hague came around to score on a two-out error in the top of the fourth to make it 5-0.
- The Profs tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0.  With one away, Hague worked out a bases loaded walk to score Zane and Zoe Frisko plated Sam Marasheski on a sacrifice fly to right to cap the scoring.
- Zane singled to center with one away to drive in McNair in the top of the sixth to round out the scoring.

For The Shorewomen (2-4)
- Hitting: DiMarcello (2-for-3)
- Pitching: Ashley Politza (loss 0-2, four innings, six hits, seven runs, two earned, two walks, zero strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had five hits in the game, drew zero walks and had one on via hit by pitch as they left six on base.
- WC had three errors in the field, leading to five unearned runs for the Profs.

For Rowan (2-1)
- Hitting: McNair (2-for-4, three runs), Thomas (3-for-4, three RBI), Zane (2-for-4, two runs), Hague (1-for-2, RBI, run, walk)
- Pitching: Alexa Saccomanno (win 1-0, four innings, four hits, zero runs and walks, five strikeouts)
- The Profs had eight hits and worked out two walks as they left six on base.
- Rowan committed one error in the field, but did not lead to a WC run.

Notes
- Washington and Rowan were playing each other for the third time in three days as the two teams split a doubleheader in Chestertown on Thursday with Washington winning 3-2 in game one and Rowan prevailing 3-0 in the second contest.
