Shorewomen Split Twinbill versus Green Terror

Washington Wins 7-3 in Opener While McDaniel Captures Second Game, 5-4; Moery Homers in Both Games

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College and visiting McDaniel split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field.  The Shorewomen used a five-run bottom of the first to spark a 7-3 win in game one, while the Green Terror held off the Shorewomen in game two, 5-4.  The Shorewomen are 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while the Green Terror are 3-1 overall and in the Centennial.

How It Happened
- The Green Terror struck for a two-out run in the top of the first inning as Mattie Whalen singled to second base to score Michaela Persinger.
- The lead was short lived as Washington plated five in the bottom of the first to lead 5-1 after a frame. Alyssa Vieira scored on a throwing error by the Green Terror to knot the game at 1-1 with nobody out and Hannah Solge scored on a fielder's choice to put WC ahead 2-1.  With two runners on, Grace Moery socked a three-run home run to centerfield to also plate Megan Robbins and Lexie Witmer to cap the five-run outburst.
- McDaniel got two of the runs back in the top of the second on a Megan Horsey two-run single to left field with two away that drove in both Myannah Robinson and Meg Cappadora to trim the lead to 5-3.
- With one away in the last of the fourth, Hallman and Vieira both came around to score courtesy of two throwing errors to make it 7-3 and finish the scoring.

For The Shorewomen (3-6, 1-2 CC)
- Hitting: Vieira (2-for-4, two runs), Lexi Barnhart (2-for-4), Chrissy Segrest (2-for-3), Witmer (2-for-3, run), Moery (three RBI, home run)
- Pitching: Lexi Barnhart (win 3-3, complete game, five hits, three runs, three earned, three walks, 12 strikeouts)
- Washington committed zero errors in game one.
- The Shorewomen had 10 hits and drew one walk in the game, while leaving five on base.

For McDaniel (2-1, 2-1 CC)
- Hitting: Horsey (2-for-4, two RBI)
- Pitching: Mel Grant (loss 1-1, one inning, five hits, five runs, four earned, one walk, one strikeout), Krista Waller (five innings, five hits, two unearned runs, zero walks, four strikeouts)
- McDaniel had five errors in the opener, leading to three runs for WC.
-The Bullets had five hits and drew three walks, while stranding five on base.

Notes
- Barnhart set her career-high with 12 strikeouts and season-high for a Washington hurler.

McDaniel 5 Washington College 4 (Game 2)

How It Happened
- In the bottom half of the first, Robbins singled up the middle with two away to plate Vieira and in the last of the second Moery scored on a groundout off the bat of Julia Hallman.
- McDaniel got on the board in the top of the third as Robinson plated Persinger on an infield single to the pitcher with one out.  The next hitter, Colleen Camburn for the guests ahead for the rest of the game on a two-run single up the middle to plate both Horsey and Evie Craig.
- Robinson gave McDaniel a 4-2 advantage in the top half of the fourth with a one out sacrifice fly to left field that knocked in Persinger.
- Moery hit her second home run of the day, this time a solo longball to left-center to trim the lead to 4-3 leading off bottom half of the fourth.
- Camburn put the Green Terror back ahead by two runs at 5-3 on an infield single to third by Camburn that drove in Justeen Cooley with one away in the top of the sixth.
- Robbins would trim the McDaniel lead to a run with a two-out solo homer to left-center.  Witmer would represent the last hope for WC, but she grounded out to Robinson in the circle to end the game.

For The Shorewomen (3-7, 1-3 CC)
- Hitting: Robbins (3-for-3, home run, two RBI), Moery (2-for-3, home run, two runs), Amelia Mazza (2-for-3)
- Pitching: Ashley Politza (loss 0-4, 3 1/3 innings, nine hits, four runs, three earned, zero walks, five strikeouts), Barnhart (3 2/3 innings, four hits, one run, one earned, one walks, six strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had seven hits in the game, drew three walks and had one get on via hit by pitch as they left seven on base.
- WC had three errors in the field, leading to one unearned runs for the guests.

For McDaniel (3-1, 3-1 CC)
- Hitting: Persinger (2-for-3, two runs), Horsey (2-for-4, run), Craig (3-for-4, run), Robinson (2-for-3, two RBI), Camburn (2-for-4, three RBI)
- Pitching: Robinson (win 1-0, 3 2/3 innings, one hit, one run, one earned, two walks, three strikeouts), Parker Murphy (3 1/3 innings, six hits, three runs, three earned, one walk, zero strikeouts)
- The Green Terror had 13 hits with the aid of a one walk and had four get on due to hit by pitch in the second game as they left 14 on base.
- McDaniel committed zero errors in the field.

Notes
- Washington went deep twice for the first since February 22, 2020 in game two of a doubleheader versus Wesley.
