Shorewomen Use Pair of One-Run Wins to Sweep Diplomats

Washington Wins 9-8 in Nine in Opener and 3-2 in Second Game

LANCASTER, Pa. – Visiting Washington College won two games by a single run each to sweep host Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Baker Campus Softball Field in a Centennial Conference softball twinbill.  The Shorewomen won 9-8 in nine innings and game one and 3-2 in the second game. The Shorewomen are now 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial, while the Diplomats are 5-3 overall and in the conference.

How It Happened
- Washington plated two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead  With one away, Hannah Solge hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Julia Hallman and one batter later Alyssa Vieira scored on a Grace Moery single.
- In the last of the third, Franklin & Marshall struck for five runs to make it 5-2 with the big hit coming off the bat of Sam Martin who socked a three-run home run to make it 4-2 with nobody out.  Abi Buell capped the scoring with a base hit that scored Jill Holoboski.
- The Shorewomen got two back in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4 as Moery hit a two-run homer to left to also score Solge with two away.  In the last of the fifth, Buell hit a sacrifice fly that scored Martin to make it 6-4 after five.
- Washington netted a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth to tie it, both coming with two outs. Lexi Barnhart scored on a throwing error to trim it to 6-5 and a batter later Amelia Mazza scored on a base hit by Vieira to tie it at 6-6.
- F&M answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead at 7-6 as Sami LaRosa scored on a one-out base hit by Devin Witt.
- Washington tied it at 7-7 in the top of the seventh on a one-out double by Megan Robbins that scored Solge.
- Each team scored in the eighth inning as WC took the lead on a two-out infield single to shortstop by Vieira that plated Mazza, while F&M's Martin tripled and scored on an error to even the contest at 8-8.
- In the top of the ninth, Robbins scored the winning run on a Barnhart single with nobody out.
- Barnhart retired the Diplomats in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

For The Shorewomen (5-8, 3-4 CC)
- Hitting: Solge (4-for-4, two runs), Vieira (3-for-5, two RBI), Barnhart (3-for-5), Moery (2-for-5, three RBI), Robbins (2-for-5), Lexie Witmer (2-for-5), Mazza (2-for-5, two runs)
- Pitching: Lexi Barnhart (win 5-3, complete game, 13 hits, eight runs, seven earned, three walks, nine strikeouts)
- Washington committed two errors in game one, leading to one Franklin & Marshall run.
- The Shorewomen had 18 hits and drew zero walks in the game, while leaving eight on base.

For Franklin & Marshall (5-2, 5-2 CC)
- Hitting: Buell (4-for-4, two RBI), Martin (3-for-5, three runs, three RBI, home run), Witt and Jamie Belfer (2-for-5)
- Pitching: Peightyn Schwartz (loss 1-1, 3 1/3 innings, nine hits, three runs, three earned, zero walks, one strikeout), Holoboski (5 2/3 innings, nine hits, six runs, five earned, zero walks, one strikeout)
- Franklin & Marshall committed two errors in the opener, leading to two WC runs.
- The Diplomats had 13 hits, drew three walks and had one get on via hit by pitch, while stranding eight on base.

Notes
- Washington scored six of its nine runs with two outs, while F&M scored zero runs with two away.

Franklin & Marshall 3 Washington College 2 (Game 2)

How It Happened
- Each team scored in the first inning as Moery doubled home Vieira with one away for the game's first run in the top half of the first, while Belfer scored on a one-out single by Buell to tie it at 1-1.
- Vieira put the Shorewomen ahead for good with a two-out, two-run double that scored both Mazza and Chrissy Segrest to make it 3-1.
- Ella Glenn led off the last of the fifth for F&M with a home run to left to trim the lead to 3-2.  The hosts loaded the bases with nobody out, but Barnhart got two strikeouts and pop out to escape the jam.
- In the last of the seventh, the Diplomats got a runner to second with one away, but a fly out and pop out ended the game and doubleheader.

For The Shorewomen (6-8, 4-4 CC)
- Hitting: Vieira (3-for-4, two RBI), Moery (2-for-4, RBI)
- Pitching: Barnhart (win 6-3, complete game, 11 hits, two runs, two earned, three walks, seven strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had 10 hits in the game and drew zero walks as they left seven on base.
- WC had zero errors in the field.

For Franklin & Marshall (5-3, 5-3 CC)
- Hitting: Glenn (2-for-3, home run), Belfer (2-for-4, run), Buell (2-for-4, RBI), Kat Gunther (2-for-3)
- Pitching: Holoboski (loss 3-1, three innings, six hits, three runs, three earned, zero walks, one strikeout), Schwartz (four scoreless innings, four hits, zero walks, one strikeout)
- The Diplomats had 11 hits, three walks and two reach via hit by pitch as they left 12 on base.
- Franklin & Marshall committed zero errors in the field.

- Since 2016, Washington is 9-1 against Franklin & Marshall
