Box Score Center Valley, Pa. – The Washington College women's volleyball team dropped their opening match of the season in straight sets against the NYU Violets, on the first day of the DeSales University Invitational. NYU (2-0) won by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-23.
How It Happened
- The Shorewomen were unable to recover from six service errors in the opening set. Sophomore outside hitter Sylvia Johnson posted a team-high three kills in the opening frame.
- Sophomore defensive specialist Jordan Fairchild evened the second set at 5-5 with a service ace, however, the Violets recorded the next four points and never looked back. Junior outside hitter Courtney Maxwell registered three kills in the set.
- Washington College played their best volleyball of the night in the final set. The Shorewomen fell behind by a score of 17-11 but did not go down without a fight. Senior setter Jensyn Hartzel's kill capped a 9-5 run to bring the Shorewomen within 22-20. NYU scored the next two points to gain their first match point, however, a hitting error and a kill by Maxwell trimmed the deficit to 24-23. The Violets ended the match on the next play as freshman middle Leela Anveker came up with a kill.
For the Shorewomen
- Maxwell led all Shorewomen with seven kills in the match. Sophomore outside hitter Angelina Schaber added four kills and Johnson recorded three put-aways. Sophomore middle Riley McHugh contributed a pair of block assists.
For NYU
- Junior Ella Spaethling recorded a team-best seven kills while freshman outside hitter Taylor Odum and junior middle Haley Holz each had six winners. Freshman libero Lindsey Hirano came up with a match-high 12 digs.
