CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Junior Gage Mandrell won an event and was the runner-up in a pair of others but the Washington College men's swimming team fell to the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats on Senior Day, 188-73, Saturday afternoon at the Casey Swim Center.
Mandrell captured the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:01.24, besting the runner-up by over three seconds. Mandrell also finished second in the 100 (59.25) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.20, 2nd fastest by a Shoreman this year). His time in the 100 is a personal-best and the eighth-fastest time in program history.
The Shoremen turned in several other runner-up performances. Sophomore Justin Morris touched the wall in 2:04.51 in the 200 backstroke while Bianti Danaj hit the wall in 54.23 in the 100 butterfly.
The 200 medley relay team and the 400 free relay also placed second. The team of Danaj, Mandrell, freshman Chase Hensen and sophomore Benjamin Wilson turned in a time of 1:36.65 in the 200 medley relay. Danaj, Wilson, freshman Zach Affeldt and freshman William Schmidt recorded a time of 3:24.94 in the 400 free relay.
Affeldt (100 backstroke, 55.75 and 100 butterfly, 54.49), Danaj (50 freestyle, 22.23), and senior Nate Braddock (200 individual individual medley, 2:05.15) all turned in third-place finishes.
Hensen's time of 2:15.21 in the 200 breaststroke was a personal-best and the third fastest-time by a Shoreman this season in the event.
Schmidt's time of 2:06.37 in the 200 backstroke was a personal-best and the second-fastest by a Shoreman this season in the event.
