Swarthmore, Pa.- Washington College senior guard Crystal Jones scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, however, the Shorewomen fell to the Swarthmore Garnet by a count of 59-46, in a Centennial Conference contest on Monday evening. The Shorewomen fall to 12-8 (8-7 C.C.) while the Garnet improve to 10-9 (6-8 C.C.).
How It Happened
- Swarthmore, who led from wire-to-wire, went ahead 14-2 after the opening quarter as they held Washington to just one field goal and forced seven turnovers. Freshman guard Alyssa Hayashi scored seven points to lead the Garnet in the period.
- Forward Kim Kockenmeister drilled a trey from the right-corner to make it 17-2 just 32 seconds into the second quarter.
- The Shorewomen finally got things going on the offensive end as they scored seven straight points to close within 17-9 with 3:57 left in the half. Junior guard Joy Sanders and sophomore forward Kaleigh White connected on jumpers and then junior guard Andrea Prestianne converted a conventional 3-point play.
- Erin Cronin stopped the run with a pair of free-throws, however, White scored on a wide-open layup and Jones followed with a trifecta from the left-corner to bring the visitors within 19-14 with 3:01 left.
- Following a jumper by Hayashi, Prestianne delivered another 3-point play after a nifty runner in the lane, making it 21-17 at the 1:46 mark.
- The hosts scored the final five points of the stanza to lead 26-17 as Katelyn Becker connected on a jumper and then T. Sallie stuck a long-distance attempt from the right-corner just before the halftime buzzer.
- Swarthmore extended their lead to 31-19 after Sallie hit a right-corner trey at the 8:47 mark of the third quarter.
- The Shorewomen were able to close within nine points on a pair of occasions in the third quarter, the last at 39-30 after Prestianne went coast-to-coast for a layup to end the scoring in the frame.
- Swarthmore opened the fourth quarter on a 10-1 burst to essentially put the game out of reach, 49-31, with just 6:40 on the clock.
For the Shorewomen
- Jones (3-for-8) hit 3 treys and went 4-for-6 from the foul line to pace the visitors.
- Prestianne (4-for-13) was also in double-figures with 11 points.
- Sophomore center Serena Pluta contributed 7 caroms.
For the Garnet
- Hayashi tossed in a game-high 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She went 8-for-12 from the charity-stripe.
- Becker was also in double-figures with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-for-4 from downtown.
Notes
- The Shorewomen and Garnet split the season-series as Washington won, 70-63, last Wednesday in Chestertown.
- Washington hit 17-of-61 (27.9 percent) of their field goal attempts, went 3-for-13 (23.1 percent) from behind the arc, and made 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) of their free-throws.
- Swarthmore connected on 31.6 percent (18-for-57) of their attempts, 30 percent (6-for-20) from distance, and 60.7 (17-for-28) of their free-throws
-The Garnet forced 19 turnovers and outscored the visitors by a 16-5 total in points off turnovers.
- Rebounds were even at 43
- Washington and Dickinson are now tied for fourth-place in the conference standings.
