Box Score Ewing, N.J. - The Washington College men's tennis squad fell to the College of New Jersey Lions, 8-1, in a non-conference match on Friday evening at TCNJ Recreation Center. The Shoremen fall to 2-2 while the hosts improve to 6-0.
The Shoremen picked up their lone victory of the evening at the top singles spot as junior Karl Hoegstedt defeated Matthew Michibata in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Washington College put up a great fight on the No. 3 court but sophomore Ryohei Kawai was eventually defeated in three hard-fought sets. After falling 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak) in the opening set, Kawai rallied to knot the match with a 6-1 second-set victory. However, his opponent, Adrian Tsui, pulled out a thrilling third set by a score of 10-8 to capture the match.
Junior Landon Strober fell to Justin Wain at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-3, senior Koby Bonta dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decison at No. 4 singles, freshman Brady Burns was defeated by Nick Matkiwsky, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot, and freshman Aaradith Ravichandran lost 6-1, 6-0 to Derek Jordan at the No. 6 slot.
The Lions won all three doubles matches to open the match. Michibata/Wain defeated Hoegstedt/senior Andrew Smith at the top spot, 8-3, Matkiwsky/Kilibarda bested Bonta/Strober on the No. 2 court, 8-6, and Jordan/Jacob Quijano knocked off Kawai/Burns at No. 3, 8-5.
The Shoremen will travel to Mary Washington on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
