Box Score 2 Vieira and Barnhart Tally Three Hits in DH
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington College softball team faced off against Catholic University in a non-conference twinbill on Saturday afternoon. The Shorewomen left D.C. with a pair of losses by scores of 8-2 and 8-1. The Cardinals improve to 8-4 on the year, while the Shorewomen drop to 5-8.
Game One: Cardinals 8, Shorewomen 2
How It Happened
- The Shorewomen scored the first run of the twin bill in the top of the third inning. With one down, freshman infielder Chloe Trefz earned a free pass and advanced to second after sophomore infielder Hannah Solge singled in the next at-bat. Senior outfielder Alyssa Vieira singled to load them up and sophomore pitcher Lexi Barnhart drove in a run before the inning concluded to give the good guys a 1-0 advantage.
- Trefz struck again in the fourth. With two down and a runner on third, Trefz slapped an RBI-single through the right side to set the Washington advantage, 2-0.
- The Cardinals needed just one frame to score all eight of their runs in the game. Allie Lajeunesse slapped in a two-RBI single to knot the game up at 2-2, which Katie Hurd followed with a RBI-double. Both of the above scored on a base hit from Sarah Spaeth, and the final three runs came across courtesy of a double from Makayla Czan.
For The Shorewomen (5-7)
- Hitting: Vieira (2-for-4), Barnhart (2-for-3, RBI), Trefz (1-for-3, RBI, BB)
- Pitching: Barnhart (loss 2-5, six innings, 12 hits, eight earned runs, three walks, three strikeouts)
- Washington had seven hits, earned one walk and left eight on base.
- The Shorewomen had one error.
For The Cardinals (7-4)
- Hitting: Lajeunesse (2-for-3, two RBI, run), Czan (1-for-4, three RBI)
- Pitching: Hurd (win 5-2, 7.0 innings, seven hits, two earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts)
- The Cardinals had 12 hits and drew three walks while leaving eight stranded.
- Catholic had one error.
Game Two: Cardinals 8, Shorewomen 1
How It Happened
- The Shorewomen wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in Game Two. Vieira reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a triple from freshman outfielder Lilly Cook to put the visitors ahead, 1-0.
- Catholic pieced together back-to-back scoring frames in the third and fourth to jump ahead. Sophia Fike doubled to score Czan, and Fike scored later in the inning on a Sammy Phillips single to left center. In the fourth, the Cardinals added four more runs on five hits to set a 6-1 advantage for the hosts.
- The Cardinals got some insurance in the sixth inning. An inning involving two errors and a passed ball saw the hosts bring two more across to set the final, 8-1.
For The Shorewomen (5-8)
- Hitting: Cook (1-for-3, RBI), Vieira (1-for-3, run)
- Pitching: Gen Kozub (loss 3-3, six innings, 13 hits, eight runs, six earned runs, three walks, three strikeouts)
- Washington had six hits in the game and left seven on base.
- The Shorewomen committed five errors in the game leading to two Cardinals runs.
For The Cardinals (8-4)
- Hitting: Fike (3-for-3, three runs, two RBI, walk), Phillips (2-for-4, two RBI)
- Pitching: Justina Benvenuto (win 3-2, 6.0 innings, six hits, one earned run, one strikeout), Lajeunesse (1.0 inning, zero hits, zero runs)
- The Cardinals had 13 hits, recorded three walks and left 10 on base.
- Catholic had two errors in the game.
