Softball Sweeps Dickinson As Pitchers Shut Down Red Devils

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College women's softball team swept the Dickinson Red Devils in the Centennial Conference opener for both squads on Saturday at the Washington College Softball Complex. The Shorewomen won the opener by a score of 1-0 and took the nightcap, 3-1. Washington improves to 8-9 (2-0) while the visitors drop to 6-11 (0-2).

Game 1, Washington College 1, Dickinson 0
- The Shorewomen scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the lone tally of the contest. Freshman left fielder Lilly Cook stroked a one-out single through the right side to get the rally started. Cook then stole second and advance to third on a throwing error by catcher Brooke Espenshade.  Sophomore third baseman Hannah Solge then walked to set the stage for senior center fielder Alyssa Vieira. Vieira reached first on a throwing error by shortstop Hannah Seburn and Cook came around to score on the play.
- Dickinson had an opportunity to even the game in the top of the seventh but sophomore starter Lexi Barnhart got out of a one-out bases loaded jam to close out the contest. 

For the Shorewomen
Hitting
-Cook (1-for-3 run) and Solge (1-for-2, walk) had the only two hits in the game for the hosts.
Pitching
- Barnhart (3-6) was terrific as she went the distance on the shutout. The right-hander scattered six hits, walked three and fanned four against the 29 batters faced.

For the Red Devils
Hitting
- Center fielder Devon Kueny went 2-for-4 and third baseman Paige Hahn was 2-for-3.
Pitching
- Riley Kuehn was the hard-luck loser (5-3) after allowing just two hits and an unearned run. She walked just one batter and struck out six.

Game Two: Washington College 3, Dickinson 1
How It Happened
- The visitors scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning for their lone tally. Hahn led-off with an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on a throwing error by freshman first baseman Maddy Kendall.  
- Washington did all of their damage in the fifth inning as they scored three runs on three hits and a pair of walks. Freshman shortstop Chloe Trefz drew a lead-off walk and then stole second and third. Vieira recorded a one-out RBI single up the middle to even the contest. Junior catcher Lexie Witmer came up with two outs and the bases juiced and promptly stroked a two-run single to right center for the game-winning hit. Senior shortstop Megan Robbins (fielder's choice) and designated player Shannon Rosche (single) scored the go-ahead runs.

For the Shorewomen
Hitting
- Vieira went 2-for-3 (RBI, run) with a stolen base.
- Witmer finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Pitching
- Freshman Gen Kozub improved to 5-3 after firing a complete-game. She scattered six hits while fanning seven against just one walk.

For the Red Devils
Hitting
-Seburn went 2-for-3 and Hahn was 2-for-3 (2B, run)
Pitching
-Lindsay Kucker took the loss (2-4) after yielding three earned runs over 2.1 innings of relief.

- The Shorewomen will host Salisbury on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
